Hi folks,

I recently got my dog mated with a 90% black gsd female. My dog is black & tan & is registered with the KCI. The picture is on this messageboard as well with the name Maxwell. My question is, does the size of the pups (height & length) depend more on the sire or the dam? The female I chose was not too big. I was watching natgeo just yesterday & there was a documentary on wild cats where they said that the size of the offsprings is more oftenly decided by the sire & not by the dam. Is it right?

Can I ask you, in humans is it the mother or the father that contributes to height and size of the offspring? Both of course can contribute. No difference in dogs or any other species.

I believe it goes beyond either,   I know there are experts who will tell you they have this science all figured out, but I dont believe that for one second.    Nature has its own way and its not so predictable.   Genes can show up from an ancient ancestor many generations back.  Its not so easy to lay life out on a spred sheet and say this is that.  Its like predicting the weather with a computer program all you get are numbers, odds, percentages of probability.  Some odds are higher than others, but thats no guarantee.    Guess work at best.    I'd say either or.  Certain genetic traits do follow the male, same for a female, but definately not all and not with certanty.

Sometimes a small to medium sized bitch can consistently have large and even oversized pups no matter who the sire is, whether it is a medium to large sized male.  Go figure on that one.  It's all a mystery.  Veronica
