Hello All,
Please give me your opinion on my 25 month old male GSD hip x-rays. (No sedation).
Thanks

Something about that left hip...am I imagining things? (Its the left hip facing the camera, but is actually the right hip.)

Viewed from above the dog, in my opinion the left hip is probably O.F.A. "Good" and the right hip is probably O.F.A. "Fair." I base my opinion on the pelvic coverage of the femoral ball. Unless there are things I cannot see, I think these hips will definitely pass the O.F.A. or S.V..

I think the ball of the left hip look a bit smaller than the right one due to positioning. I've seen that a lot on xrays that went to OFA and it doesn't seem to be a factor with them and doesn't normally effect their rating. You can't see the knees or the tips of the wings of the pelvis so can't be sure the positoning is or is not perfect. The right hip was probably closer to the xray machine when the switch was hit. It's really hard to get a perfect xray on a dog that is not anesthesized and just the slighest resistance from that dog can result in what you see here. It's still a good xray of diagnostic quality.

the hips look good structurally but should be tighter, better seated especially since the dog is adult. This may be considered normal for a puppy or adolescent. I'd say they should pass, but with Fair.

I'm referring to the left side as you are looking at xray the but without seeing the R or L identification marker, it could actually be the right hip of the dog. An xray looks the same from the back or from the front and the only way to know for sure which side you are looking at is to be able to see the marker and that is not visible on this xray. I hope it is on the xray somewhere as I don't think OFA will not accept it if it's not.

Thanks to all who responded with your opinions. I will post the results when I get them back from the SV & OFA. He's a really nice showline GSD that works very good and I have high hope for him. I just wanted to make sure his hips are OK before I continue to work him for his Sch 2 & 3 titles.

Maybe you should consider supplementing his nutrition with glucosamine and chondroitin as a preventattive measure (especially if you are going to work him daily). There is good evidence that this is a Cox 2 inhibitor and helps prevent unwanted inflamation in joints which can itself lead to arthritic changes.
