This is a dog for sale on the DB, I have never seen a GSD with these Markings and Colors , is this considered a Bicolored GSD.?

by hodie on 19 February 2008 - 16:02

Yes, I would consider it a bi-color with a little more white than normal. But only genetic tests would determine whether there was a tri-colored breed somewhere in the background. Such DNA testing is now available for many dog breeds.

Thanks  hodieI never knew there was such thing as tricolors in a GSD, are they rare or is it common, Guess you never stop learning

 delacruz,

I am NOT suggesting he is called a tri color. I am simply noting that he appears to have more white than most bi-colored dogs. Even the red and black dogs, or black and tan dogs often have some white although it more often than not appears in paw areas and chest. The white on this dog is more noticeable because he is so darkly pigmented and also is patterned a little differently on his leg, for example.

For a real color bonanza, you should see the yellow lab I have as a client who has a large splotch of black in several places on his body.......I had never seen that before. Sometime I should take a photo of him and post just for fun.

This was typical of many of the old DDS dogs. This can still be found descending from Don vom Rolandsteich line

I thought the dog just looked like his leg has possibly been shaved lately.  Perhaps I'm wrong.

Yes it is a pretty girl, I din't post that picture to critque the dog, nothing against the dog or color I just never seen this perticular color on a GSD thats all.

Bicolor dog - the "white" between the hind legs is 100% normal, and seen in most bicolors in various degrees.  The only thing about the color/markings that I see as "different" is the tan on the sides of the muzzle - more like a dobermann or Rott, or collie.  black/tan GSDs normally do not have the color on the sides of the muzzle like that.  But I don't think the dog is mixed breed, just unusual markings on the muzzle.
