I was in Australia this summer and saw that at the local shops they have a preventative that istaken daily...I would like to hear from anyone in the usa or outside who has used something effective that doesn't require a prescription...tthanks...also is interceptor popular in other countries as well

I think the daily tabs used to be called Filarabits or something. It sucks to have to remember to give them every day! It is off the market now anyway!

Ivermectin, careful with the dosage, but the same thing that's in heartguard- the cost is so minimal anyway- why not use the script?

I been using Ivamectin on all my dogs , I get them checked for heartworms yearly test come back negative, also it prevents fleas, none of my gogs ever have fleas, never use any prventetive for fleas my vet tells my it does prevent fleas too.
Befor you use Ivamectin you need to do a heartwormtest at your Vet. USE it with coution NOT EVERY BREED CAN TOLERATE IVAMECTIN. You find it at your feed store, I pay $38.00 + tax.

Ivermec,
Just be careful with the dosage, it can cause alot of damage if not used correctly.
I have one dog that reacts badly to Interceptor as well.
I'd like to find something new myself.

I use Interceptor for my guys too.
Filarbits was the "old" heartworm prevention used here in the states that had to be taken everyday. And as Powerhaus said is no longer available in the U.S.

What dosage do you recommend?

The new medications are safer and more effecitve than filarabits (caracide in chewable form) - the old caricide was cheap and I missed it since it was so much cheaper than filarabits...but very dangerous should the dog have circulating microfilaria
I think people hesitiate to give you directions for using ivomec or the paste form for horses because it is a poison and it is not approved use of these products (non livestock use) ................. so you are on your own.
You do know though that the prescription form has the actual dosage in mg on the box as do the other products. Interceptor is not ivermectin though and the livestock products (and Heartgard) are. Some people stretch out the Interceptor to 45 days based on clinical data.
