Good morning Folks, I've been a lurker here for quite some time but only post occassionaly. This is a littlelong but I think you'll appreciate the situation since I'm sure quite a few of you have been there.
You know how life just surprises you sometimes and reaches over and whacks you one? Well, Saturday was that kind of day for me. My friend and I decided to drive over to Tallahassee to see if we could catch part of a Schutzhund trial they were holding at Moccasin Gap Dog club. Nice drive but we missed the competition. Several dogs pulled at the last minute and they only did the BH testing on the younger dogs. They did still have a bonfire planned and we spent the afternoon meeting new folks and watching some pups and young dogs doing prey drive training. But, on to the whack. As my close friends know very well, I've been having competition withdrawals. My male, Jamieson (White GSD rescued as pup) is just getting too old 10 yo (and his hips bug him a lot of the time) and my showline girl, Bree is, well Bree. She's quite capable but really does NOT like going to shows or competing. The club house training grounds are fine but anywhere else and she makes her unhappiness known to everyone. So I've been without a competition dog for more than a year now. I've, also, joined the local SAR team and I'd really like to work with the K9's but again no dog. I'd discussed the situation with dh and he's been really hesitant because he didn't feel we could handle a 3rd dog. Lately, he'd soften his position a little when he realized how much my boy Jamieson is aging. So I started looking again for my new competition dog. I'd had it narrowed to a couple of breeders when a friend that breeds Working lines (with nice structure) announced her future litter. It's an incredible potential litter with almost of the stuff I want. I've been corresponding with her for a few days and told my friend on the trip to Tallahassee that I really thought this would be the one I'd go for except the price $1,200 was going to be a MAJOR issue with my dh (he's not a dog person and really has no idea what things cost) How does this relate to a Tallahassee trip you ask? Well, we'd only been there a short time and were getting to know some of the folks. It stretched my brain some since it's been a few years since I've talked Schutzhund lines and trainers with anyone (no local club). Turned out, we had a lot of mutual friends. I'm standing around getting some serious Mal puppy loving, when the owner of one the pups, looks up and says in a joking voice "So you have Shepherds huh - Want another one?" I surprised him by answering yeah, I've been looking for new boy. There's some more kidding and questions about what I want and intend to do with the dog. Finally, he says - "Well, I've got one that's exactly what you described and if you'll take him home with you today - He's free!" No, I can't do that. Sure, you can (I tell my friend to stop laughing!) All afternoon, are you taking the pup, he's green but has the basics, very social, housebroken, crate trained, good with other dogs, etc. Finally, why are you giving him up - I'm told "he's not intense enough for personal protection or police work just a little too laid back" The owner specializes in training dogs for personal protection and security work. The rest of the litter has been sold and is being trained with that in mind but this boy is just not drivey enough. I'm still saying No, I can't do this. They bring him out. He's very pretty - Plush Red Sable, 1yo, lovable and thin.

Soooooo ???? Did you take him home?

Sorry it cut off part of tpost - here's the rest:
He snuffles my arm and wants to snuggle. I tell the guy that I can't do it without asking my dh. Cell reception is terrible and I can't get him. Finally just before the bonfire starts, I get him on the phone and surprise, he agrees we can try it.
Shaking my head, I tell "Larry?", bring him out he's going home with me. Other folks start the congrat's on the dog and my friend is still laughing at me! Larry tells me to give him 3 wks if it doesn't work, I can bring him back (also wants him back if he suddenly develops very strong drives and gets more intense - in fact I wasn't that sure he still wanted me to take him home!). He didn't come with papers but his mom is a Czech Import from Hungary and dad is a working K9 from DDR lines. He arrived home after spending a good portion of the 2 1/2 hr ride protecting us from the attacks of the headlights of the cars behind us. Came in the house and intro'd himself to my DH by climbing in his lap and nuzzling his neck. DH likes him, Jamieson is very pleased (he likes pups & young dogs) and Bree knows he's here and the jury's still out with her but she seems interested in a good way. We don't have a name yet but it won't be the one they were using "Tiny" He's not a Tiny. But if all goes well over the 3 week trial period, he will be mine and here to stay. So "Ty" welcome to our home.Melissa

Congrats on the dog, but what kind of a guy is Larry? If the dog shows some drive, he wants it back? This is a favor you are doing for him. You are providing a good home for a dog that didn't fit his needs and all of a sudden, if the dog develops intensity, he wants it back? I was excited about Larry until he gave you that line. Do you know Larry's last name?

Well congratulations! When you get a chance please post some pics.

Larry's OK and I do know quite a bit about him. He was kidding about getting the dog back. His main point was if I ever changed my mind, he'd take the dog back. I can't see myself changing my mind. He's too good a fit at my house. It was a favor to take him but I had a long talk with the head trainer about the pup (I've known him for several years) and he confirmed everything I was told and said that if he'd known Larry was serious about rehoming him, he'd have already placed him with someone.

that's cool. I thought that was seriously what he said.

Where are his papers? How are you gonna title him with no paperwork? If you wanted to? Did you ask for the papers? I know he could block his registry to no breeding until his hips are done and his titles are in place...but as long as you have no document showing this dog is yours ,,,,got news for you...he can reclaim the dog any day of the week...Make him sign a bill of sale to you...and ask for his puppy akc registration number..
When you accept a dog from a person in the sport or under starnge circumstances ,,,,,you just never know what may happen down the line...he sees you with his high drivey pup he so called, freely gaave you and you have no proof,,,could be trouble with a capital T... just from years of experience in THE DOG WORLD>>>>>>>>
The he said, she said ,, is dangerous in todays world...you will alwa ys wonder....so ask for a written statement.....saying he gave you this dog and sign date and witness it....for your safety and for your friendship .....many a friendship has been broken and destroyed over a "free dog"

I agree with YR, something to tell you the dog is yours would just make things much simpler in the event people get that selective memory loss or change of heart. Not saying Larry's not a stand up guy but things happen and you will be sorry you didn't get something in writting in the event this dog turns out to be a ball of fire and ole Larry is chewing his nails off that he gave em up after you've spent the time on him and grew attached. Good luck with your pup.

I do have a bill of sale and Larry's sending me the rest of his paperwork (pedigree, vet records, etc.) by mail. I do know where to find him if I don't get the remaining papers quickly. The papers I was referring to are registration. I will not be breeding, ever. I simply don't have the interest or desire to do so. Competition will be under a limited registration number (after he's neutred) mostly in AKC obedience and agility The club in Tallahassee is the nearest place to me that has Schutzhund (DVG) training and they train mostly during the week. I really can't make the drive since there's also a time change for me (CST to EST). So I'll be working him with my local all-breed club and with my SAR team trainer.
You're right, it's important to have all our ducks in a row especially when a dog comes to you in an unusual way. It's just safer that way. I used to do a lot of rescue work in my area (now it's mostly transport and an occassional foster) so I got to see some of the bad deals that come around first hand.
BTW my vet squeezed me in this morning and Ty got a clean bill of health. So by the weekend he'll be ready for training.
