Yes, http://petfinder.com/ is definitely affiliated with Animal Planet. I spent over 12 hours at the local shelter during a 4-day period duing the past week--doing "community service" time to pay for impound/boarding fees for the alledged offenses of a 12-year-old, spayed GSD female not deemed to be "dangerous".
Part of my duties during this assignment involved assembling packets of literature for people who were adopting animals from the shelter. Included in the packet, is a DVD (provided to the shelters for only $.99) called Animal Planet Presents: Training Your Adopted Dog. On the cover of the DVD jacket, one reads Petfinder.com--Adopt a Homeless Pet--right next to the Animal Planet logo. For other slick propaganda, check out these links: http://petsincredible.com/, http://petsincredible.com/Advertising.asp, http://petsincredible.com/Shelters.asp
Another flyer (of dozens ot others available at the shelter) in the packet is put out by the Doris Day Animal Foundation (http://www.ddaf.org/). There are the often quoted statistics that 10 million humans are born in the USA every year--compared to 70 million dogs and cats. Where is there a reliable census for tabulating the births of dogs and cats?
Of course, using a HSUS footnoted source, the flyer states that "one female cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 cats in 7 years" and "one female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 in 6 years".
These statistics are invariably skewed and based on theoretical possibilities rather than facts.
When compared to the officers that I met at the "gestapo" (Humane animal Services), the office staff at the shelter did not give the appearance of being "monsters". However, do they believe this blatant propaganda or are they but "small cogs in a large wheel"?
I just went about my duties without questions rather than risk further, unannounced (complaint-driven) visits by Animal Control. You may rest assured that my other (unaltered) dogs are already in their database.

Louise,
I know you've gone over this in another post but short and sweet how did your problems with this begin?
by Louise M. Penery on 18 February 2008 - 05:02
Two Moons, my personal problem is insignificant when compared to the "bigger picture" and how it affects all of us.I didn't know that there was this much of a correlation until I was indentured to community service at the shelter (which works "hand-in-hand" with Animal Control). While there, I picked up the Animal Planet/Petfinder DVD and other revealing literature. Then, I went to the http://petsincredible.com/ website and checked out a few more links.
This is all related to PETA's "divine plan". All of the AR activism and MSN legislation are inter-related. The well-meaning employees at the shelter are trying to make a "difference" (in their own ways)--but are unaware that they are pawns to the AR activists/terrorists.
This should be a "heads up" to everyone. Yeah, the humaniacs say that all breeders are crooks. They have to look no further than the Victoria Driggs model.
My point is that we need to give more of our thoughts to the hidden agendas of AR activism--and, less to the insanity of whether some damned fool dyes and misrepresents her dogs.
If we choose to bury our collective heads in the sand and ignore the real enemy, there will be no breeders (honest or dishonest), purebred dogs, or dog sports. The least of our problems will be issues concerning moderation on Oli's PDB.

I understand, I agree, and yes I'll give it a look.
better days.

Louise, you are so right. Dog people must learn to work together for the common good. I have a big problem when I see what is happening in your state of CA. If Levine's bill passes there the rest of the country is in for big trouble in the near future. Celebrity spokespersons like that half- baked William Shatner (who was a Dobe breeder BTW), that old fart Bob Barker who can't seem to get it that he has exceded his shelf-life and is expired; does anyone really care what he thinks? Then there's Betty White who also can't seem to retire gracefully and get a life out of the spotlight. Doris Day is a fanatic. Barker freely admits he never even read Levine's bill in it's entirety, so how can he support it so staunchly? Still these are all well known people who many non-breeders will listen to only because they are celebrities. After all, who could doubt a dipstick like Rose Nylan?
Best to get over the SV dogs vs the AKC dogs and work together. I'm going to re-join the GSDCA as I feel they are the voice of this breed in the US and they are active in combatting BSL and breed bans. If any other GSD clubs are involved in similar activities, please let me know.
by Louise M. Penery on 18 February 2008 - 06:02
Blitzen, it is far more than BSL and breed bans
We must be eternally vigilant on all fronts. Otherwise, there will be no breeds (or breeders) left to ban if the PETA-philes get their way with MSN legislation.
USCA and many of its members in California are vigorous and vocal in their attempts to squelch Levine and his ilk.

Wouldn't it be nice to think that you are merely an alarmist, Louise? What really concerns me is when someone as wise, thical and experienced as you in the breed and who has a history of keeping issues toned down until all the facts are in, raises an alarm. To me it means that this is serious issue that threatens all of the dog breeds worldwide. And even worse when did all the do gooders at Peta or the county, state, and federal kenel/livestock inspectors give a rip about the issue of educating buyers and supporting the small thical breeder. Of course many of these do gooders seem to want to pass laws that promote the corporatized large scale institutional mas breeder. No large institution corporate breeding factory will ever be able or willing to do the excellent breeding of the small, ethical, honest hobby breeder enthusiast.

I gave it a quick look.. I dont want to disscuss these issues. I want someone with the where with all to create an organization I can join and support, both financially and physically. These people who threaten us are organized and have financial support. They lobby and donate money. It will take this kind of organization to do battle with them. They have publicists and lawyers and due to the propaganda alot of public support. If anything is gonna be acomplished a leader needs to be found who can give life to a movement. I personally see all our rights slipping away and see no way out of it short of a great movement. I havent seen such a movement since vietnam, and all those people have since sold out to the powers that be. Mainly money. I'm sad about my country and the world. I know why terrorists do what they do. I'm sad for my children and the world we are leaving them. I have no answers that you would like to hear. I'm sorry.
If I had the power, I would burn it all down and send us all back to the stone age..
I'm totally depressed now and I'm gonna call it a night.
I'll feel better tomorrow.
night

Louise,
This is my biggest concern for animals and people alike. We just can't seem to get it and I have less faith then you that we ever will..
by Louise M. Penery on 18 February 2008 - 07:02
Preston, I'm not an alarmist--I'm usually very conservative--not at all inclined to activism. However, I cannot bury my head in the sand and trust that everyone else except me will be impacted by the activity of AR terrorists. We can't sit back and congratulate ouselves that, because our breed is critical to "homeland security", it will be exempt.
Folks, Preston is not just talking about the Andrew Hunte's of the world. He is also referring to some of the "mass breeders" of North America--many of whom are undoubtedly regarded a "pillars of the breed". These people may be unaffected by MSN legislation (initially) under the umbrella of paying enormous licensing fees--which costs they pass on to their clients.
Myself, I don't want to have my intact, titled males exempted from MSN requirements by having to pay for licenses which will permit the A/C gestapo to inspect my premises at will and without warning.
Furthermore, my little tract home would be unlikely to pass muster because I don't own a single chainlink, kennel run and don't want my dogs to have to live in them--back and forth barking and fence running. Yes, they are known to wear bark collars from time to time--so as not to annoy the neighbors. One male and my spayed female hang out on the front deck made of synthetic decking material and in the 16x16 courtyard/patio with with pavers--surrounded by attractive privacy fencing.
In addition to a landscaped backyard with many shade trees, I also have a couple of large, sheltered, cemented, sideyards for a dog (or an occasional visiting bitch) to stay in during the daytime. They sleep in the house during the evening and may be crated indoors for several hours when I am out running errands during inclimate weather. My critters enjoy being pets, companions, and housedogs during my retirement years.
Yet, how can I be exempted by law as a legitimate "breeder" (with a kennel license) when I haven't had a litter since 1994--by choice? I do not wish to breed or keep intact bitches because I have no plans to keep any more dogs until the present ones are replaced by attrition. OTH, I have no intention of neutering my boys. Why should I?
