I have been curious about this for a long time. I've read the discussions about breeding titled and non-titled dogs.
My question is this: Would you rather breed your bitch to a Sch3 kkl dog, or an active duel purpose police or military k9?? For the sake of this discussion, the k9 is a well put together dog. Use your imagination wether it be working or show lines.
I'm interested in hearing from anyone who is interested in posting., since it is just a hypothetical question.

It would of course depend on genetics, bloodline- whether or not that dog would complement my bitch. I for one would have no problems at all using a police K9, I know quite a few that would make SchH3 dogs look like bunny rabbits. The problem is getting the ok from the actual departments.

I guess it goes back to what market you're puppies are going into. If you are leaning more towards sport dogs then I'd say the SCH III but if you are targeting a different market like police or PP dogs then the police k9 dog would be the way I'd go. Different strokes for different folks. Both have proven they have the workability so if all else checks out then both should be considered equally.

On a slightly different note, but still on topic I hope, is titling a dog a specific requirement for any 'professional' working dog?

I'm asking your personal preference. The 2 dogs you are considering both match your bitch well, health clearances, nice bloodlines, etc... basically any dog that would preform real working duties. Be it Sch, Herding, or Police service dog. I know that each brings to the table different qualities depending on what you are looking to breed.

If there were two males from the same litter and one was Sch3 and the other was a dual purpose and I couldn't test the two, I'd have to go with the K9.

There is no "right or wrong" answer...The answer is in yourself...What is your ultimate goal?...What are you breeding for?...What does your bitch bring to the table?...in working ability...structure...temperament...and the such...
When breeding you must balance out the two dogs...You're always trying to add to your breeding program something that you don't already have...I have no problem breeding one of my females to a SchH KKl dog or to a Police Dog (Service Dog)...as long as they bring what I want to my program...
And not only this but everyone's idea of a good or great Schutzhund Dog or Police Dog is different....There are some great Schutzhund Dogs that would never make the grade as a Police Service Dog...and vice versa...So this is a very hard question to answer except for yourself...

And don't forget those who do it all, like LEO Mike Andrel's V Jaeger vom Silbersee (USA) SchH3 DPO WPO PFH. Or Mike's first dog V Alex vH Dexel (Toby) SchH3 FH, his first Schutzhund dog raised from a puppy.
There's an article written by Mike in the July/August 2001 issue of Schutzhund USA, a memorial to his K-9 partner Ruger vH Dexel SchH3 DPO2 WPO, in which it says that Jaeger was the only active police dog to have ever been shown in a USA Sieger Show. Perhaps others have followed him, I don't know.
There's also V2 Galaxy von Ajaye HGH, another dog with both working and show titles.
These dogs are paragons of the breed, examples that we don't necessarily have to split them into working/sport and show. It doesn't need to be working or show. It can be both.

PSP AND DPO are approved breeding titles for police K9.
"I guess it goes back to what market you're puppies are going into. If you are leaning more towards sport dogs then I'd say the SCH III but if you are targeting a different market like police or PP dogs then the police k9 dog would be the way I'd go"
The purpose of breeding GSD's is to IMPROVE the breed. Not to hit hot target markets. When you aim to breed for just sport you begin to seperate the breed once again, such as the split of work and show. You must understand what weaknesses and strengths your dog pocesses. You then choose a mate for your dog, it should improve your dogs weakness and compliment the strengths.
Schutzhund is a breed worthy evaluation. Schutzhund is a training philosophy. During schutzhund training the TD, handler and decoy evaluate the dogs character. Some dogs are so strong that they can barely make it thru a schutzhund 1 protection routine. If this is the case perhaps the dog maybe a better candidate for K9 service or PP. If I had to I would equate schutzhund with obtaining a high school diploma. The dog should now be evaluated for service work/ K9.
In theory service dogs have proven themselves more breed worthy than sport dogs. Notice I said sport dogs and not schutzhund dogs.
