May sound like a stupid question but was wondering if you have a female that has had dew claws remove from back legs would you still use her for breeding?I know that she is most likely to past them on to pups. And why is it that some shepherds carry this gene? And which lines are most likely to carry or does it matter? Ok more than one stupid question.lol

I find that very interesting that your female had dew claws on her back feet,

I have not seen dew claws on the back feet of a Shepherd since I was a kid,
my dog Max had dew claws, back in the seventies, I have never had a pup
born with them.....

Sorry, I just find it interesting, and was going to do a post about dew claws on
the back of anyone's Shepherd's, but I just thought there's no such thing anymore....

I also breed Labrador Retriever's and I never see pups with them on the back,

You know something, you may just have a little piece of history................

if there were no other issues with the female, and she meets the standard without any other faults i would say she is breedable,  i dont ever remember dew claws being listed as a reason a dog should not be bred.

selective breeding would help to eliminate dew claws, but one would think it would take a while for it to get "bred" out of them,, similar to the long coat gene, i would think.

i havent a clue as to what lines carry it more than others.   i have seen pups with dew claws.   most people have them removed when the pups are young.

i cant ever remember asking a breeder if the pups had dew claws, i never consindered it that big of an issue.

They are typically dealt with by the breeder when the pup is young, so most people would not know if their new puppy had them or not.

If the pups are born with rear dew claws you can have them removed between 3 to 6 days old no big deal. I had a bitch that therw 4 pups in her first litter 3 were born with them 1 was not in her second litter she threw 5 pups 4 were born without them 1 had them but still great dogs
