We are planning for our next litter.  We do not have kennels so we whelp the pups in the house.  This time we are going to move the pups out of the whelping box when they get a little older, we want to move them down stairs, but its just a BIG open room, so we want to use somethign to like make a smaller room/kennel type area for the puppies.  Does anyone have any ideas? I know this is kind of open ended, but we are open to all suggestions.

We dont want to used xpens or anythign like that, because we have had pups climb out of them, and they move them around,

Any ideas (pictures would be great!)?

TIA

Jessica

An easy and cheap solution is to buy 4 sheets of 1/2" plywood and two 8' 2x4.  Cut the 2x4 into (4) 4' pieces.

Cut one sheet of plywood into two pieces for the front w/ a door.  One piece at 6' and the other at 2'.  You will need to buy a couple hinges and latches for the door.

You screw the 2x4s and the plywood in the corner and you'e got a nice 8x8 area that is safe and cheap.

Don't buy treated lumber.  Pups tend to chew and chemicals are a no-no.

Option 2

Buy a 4' high 10x10 kennel.

Your whelping box is 8' x 8'  ?   What do you have, an elephant?  Did you use 6" x 6" for pig rails?

I have a 5x5 by 6 ft. high pen in the basement. It came from Options Plus and takes about 10 minutes to put together. You can move it around with ease, and the best thing about it is you don't bust your head on the pen like you do with those dam 4 ft. high pens. Total cost $250.00.

i used pvc fencing reinforced and a stairway hand rail about 4" high to stop the mother from sliding down the wall and crushing them on the floor i used the skid resistent fiberglass shower paneling and epoxied it to the floor then at the fromt i created a guitine style with sltas that i removed from another peice of pvc fencing to raise it as the puppies grow and still give mom access i also put 2" casters on it to make it movable.

it is a 100% water proof and no pores for any scent or bacteria to get stuck in and it is super easy to clean

the dimensions i made my box are  4' high 4' deep 5' wide

When my pups got big enough to escape their whelping box, I went and bought a 6 x 6 outdoor quality 5'  high kennel run. I put a large tarp underneath it, layerered it with newspaper, then tossed wood shavings on top.  I have only have 4 pups this time, so the space works, when I have a larger litter, I can buy more panels to enlarge it. It's working beautifully.
