I keep seeing where many folks here refer to contracts with the "48-72 hour" and so forth... Vet Appt when purchasing a new Puppy. Do you live where the Vet's have opening's that fast? It amazes me...in this area it is more normal to get a week to 2 week appt after calling...unless it's an emergency. Why do "Breeder's" put this in a contract when it is so unrealistic? I would think that any Vet Appt that is "Made" by the Buyer within 48 hours should be more the Norm...especially when you consider weekends and possible holidays....Am I just missing something here? I was denied by 2 Vets an Appt at all.....they where not even taking new "Clients"....of course they where both highly recomended....the third was 10 dyas out...at the soonest. Would like to hear what others think here.........Thanks

i require a vet visit within 3 business days of puppy purchase. i guarantee the puppy's health, and if you have it for 2 weeks before going to the vet, it could get sick from something beyond my control.
if you have planned the purchase, you should be able to book an appointment within this period after puppy pickup.

In my puppy purchase, the person has 3 weeks to decide if they will keep the puppy forever,
or bring the puppy back to me, and get your money back, it can be for ANY reason at all.
I'm in no hurry to see a puppy go to the wrong home.

I work in a veterinarian office. We make sure we have overflow appointments or slots we leave open just for thses types of things. Unfortunately, most of the dogs that come to us have been pet store purchases (so we really want them to be checked). Some vets will see you that quickly.

All states have pet laws with examination periods such as "72 hours" to determine if the puppy was sick/ diseased/ unfit for sale. The contracts are simply conforming to the mandatory requirements of that specific state. Some are as long as two weeks.
Most vets will work you in to a busy schedule if needed.

I agree with kioanes-if you have signed a contract you know you are picking up a puppy-you should make the appointment ahead of time. Most vets can squeeze you in, puppy appointments are usually fairly easy provided you have a healthy pup, 10 days out is rediculous IMO, what if you have a sick dog? I would be looking for a new vet.....

The 48-72 hour vet appointment is CRITICAL for buyer and seller to determine some potential medical problem that might invalidate the contract or cause someone to want to return a pup. As someone else has stated above, if one has planned what they are doing, it should not be tough to make such an appointment in advance. And it also means one has investigated the terms of the contract BEFORE purchasing the pup.
As someone else said, most vets leave spaces for emergencies and these types of scenarios as well. I have NEVER had a vet turn me down when I needed an exam. Plan ahead. As well, if I sell a pup, it has already been to my vet several time prior to selling and then again at time of sale to double check all is ok. I do NOT want to sell any pup or dog where there might be an issue.

I fully agree with you all besides Mirasmom, you pup will leave your place healthy as stated in the healthcertificate anything could happen to the pups with in a short time, I know I purchased a pup 2 years ago the healthcertificate stated that the pup was healthy but when I received the pup it was very sick I took the pup to the clinic from the Airport after a 6 hr flight and he died in the clinic, that 48/72 hr saved me at that time the breeder returned the cost of the pup plus was willing to pay the vetbill.

A lot can happen in 36 hours to a young just sold pup....I take no chances....if you dont make the arrangement before you take the pup ,,,I have no mercy on you......You dont just go buy a pup and then if it fall sick blame the breeder...The vet is there and they will see you...if you plan ahead,,,,I wouldnt buy a pup without tests and vet check before I left the town or the county the pup was sold to me from....
Cant control all the air born diseases, in your trip to and from or where you take my pup ,,,,,,after it leaves my premises...
so 45 hours is plenty of time to get pup checked......
