My 9 month old DDR male is doing more and more tail chasing and I am looking for some ideas about this.  When I first noticed it (when he was around 5 months) I thought he needed more excercise and mental stimulation.  He gets so much of that, daily obedience & tracking and swimming 2x week and things are getting worse.  It is like he constantly wants to do something and often cannot just chill out.  My goal in increasing the activities for this dog was to tire him out and that is not happening.  I feel I am creating some sort of super athlete that has way more to offer than I know what to do with.

I am sure someone out there must have seen this before and can help me manage this in a positive way.

If your dog isn't being confined to a crate for hours at a time, like all day when someone is working  then it is an OCD thing.

Getting the dog interested in something else when this behavior just begins to show itself sometimes will help but if left too long it just gets worse, some will say it's a medical thing, it's usually not.

This is very common in German Shepherds.

The chance is that you or others may be actually helping engender this behavior. Yes, sometimes it can be a compulsive behavior in dogs, but often it is something they do for fun and then with what they perceive as some reward for doing it (and you might not even realize what that is) it can get worse. PM me and I can send you some information about how to work with this. It is really, really important that you get it stopped now.

Another possibility is that the dog has some type of phyical sensation in his tail that causes him to pay attention to the tail more than normal. Does he chew on it?
