this is a fairly new form of parvo that is now spreading through the US and affects adults and has been very lethal--   Oklahoma State University Center for Veterinary Health Sciences:

The Parvo you are mentioning is not a new form but a variant that has been known for a few years in Europe. The article says Italy has this variant. I was struck too about how the article mentions one "breeder" (and I use the term loosely) lost 600, yes SIX HUNDRED puppies in one night. Sounds like a large commercial breeding operation..........

This should, however, serve to remind us all how small the planet is becoming. Pathogens formerly unknown in our country are being imported from all over the world into this country and affecting U.S. citizens as well as animals. It is one more reason to be certain you know whom you are getting a dog from, and to be alert for the possibility that the dog is carrying a variant pathogen. It is also important to let your vet know that your dog is involved with dog sports or showing and around other dogs. Some of those dogs may have been imported and some were born here. Picking up an illness at an event is not impossible, even if a dog has been vaccinated, but it is prudent, in my opinion, to keep vaccines up to date. Sometimes a vaccine can provide some crossover immunity even if the variant is not included in the vaccine.

Thanks Diane,   I was very glad to read the  article you have linked.  I am one of the ones who read the first article and started to worry.   I agree about keeping up-to-date on vaccinations.  My vet now recommends every 3 years instead of once a year.  I have been going back & forth over whether to titer or vaccinate, and still can't come to a decision.  At least I have another 2 years before I need to decide with this dog!
