Here's the deal. I was asked this question by someone who's never had to register a dog with the AKC before. The pup was shipped with an AKC registration. The registration was totally filled out. So the new owner who purchased the pup has to send in and pay for the paperwork. They thought they were going to get the actual pedigree. The name of the pup was filled out but they noticed the line that states the registering owner has the right to name the dog. So they want to know if it's OK for them to change the name when they register?
I say that yes it's OK because if the breeder wanted to keep the dog under their kennel name they would (SHOULD) have gotten the papers themselves. And as the AKC states the REGISTERING owner has the RIGHT to name the dog. That's just my thinking. I was wondering what the board thought?

I do not have a registration paper here, but there is a difference between a call name and a registered name. If the breeder did fill out the name on the registration paper using the kennel name, then the official AKC name of the dog is the kennel name. The owners can call the dog anything they like. I believe there is a check mark place on the forms which allow a breeder to permit the owner to name the pup without any kennel reference, but for that to happen, the breeder cannot have filled out the registered name area.

DId they talk to the breeder? We have in our contract that is has to have our registered name, but they can call it whatever they want.
So if they didnt discuss it with the breeder Legally (according to AKC) they can change it, at least i would assume, BUT morally, I think they should leave it how the breeder put it. JMO

I think if you are registering a puppy for the first time you name it..
But once a dogs name is registered it cant be changed AKC

Two Moons : When I sell a puppy , the name of my pup must have "Jahnhaus " where I put it in the squares...I fill it out only with a pen and explain as in the contract the buyer signs and reads and agrees to....., and I leave the other squares open for them to name the pup what ever they want I offer suggestions of fitting names and explain , a short call name for training is better,,,but name the pup on paper anything you want as long as they dont change my name on paper..
Remember back last year when the man , who is on this database...bought my pup with a contract stating what was to appear in the name of pup,,and I also verbally discussed it with him,,,,went right home and removed with white out,,my kennel name of the registration paper and sent it in . The other thing , with online registration.,,,AKC does not see the paperwork , so they can white out your name..and do it by internet...and unless you register the dog itself, like you want it, before you sell it,,,then sometimes it becomes a fight and a royal battle....Another thing to keep buyers from doing an online registration...is to co own the litter...You cannot register a co-owned litter registration on line....

I have been debating this question myself. I also have it in my contract that the dog must be named with the kennel name as outlined by the litter letter (A, B, C, whatever), but the buyer could still change the name very easily when they register it. So, I seriously thought I was going to register the whole litter in my name this previous time. But, when it came down to it, I go to thinking, I have to pay the fee to register each puppy, then the puppy has to be transfered into the new owners name, another $15.00! I know it isn't much, but it is a racket! Isn't AKC getting enough money already? They are taking my $20 each and then another $15 just so I can insure that all of my puppies have my kennel name. That is $35, and if you ahve a litter of 10, that is $350 just to get the puppies registered with my name and under the correct owners name. I would like to think that I am selling to people with better morals than to change the name!
Also, now with the breeder management that you can do online at akc.org, you can see what your puppies names are being registered as. So, you would know if it was changed. Until I have a problem with it, I am keeping it the same.
The person who bought the puppy should have enough respect for the breeder to want to name the puppy with their name, and if they really want to change it, they should discuss it with the breeder first and maybe they can work out something.

I talked with him earlier and he said that there was no mention about the name. That he thought that he was going to get the actual ped. I told him to do what he thought was right.
I think that, for what the guy paid he shouldn't of had to pay for the registration. As for keeping the kennel name,I feel they should have done what i have always done. I always register the pups so they will always have my name. Then the new owners get the papers and just have to pay for the tranfer. Then there are no issues.
So to me if there is no verbal or written agreement about the name and it does state that the registering owner has the right to name the pup then the guy can do what he wants. That's why I always register the litter.

Ramgsd,
the basic registration costs $ 20. That is just $ 5 more than the transfer? That is no big deal. Why should I, as the breeder provide an AKC certified pedigree for the new owner? Most people buy puppies as pets. Let's be honest here. How many of these puppies do you think actually end up in show and working homes?
If you breed under SV regulations, puppies are tattooed before leaving the breeder's premises. Since my litters are always out of titled and breed surveyed parents, most of my litters are USA-registered. If I have a litter of puppies which I consider pet quality with limited AKC registration (long stockcoat, male puppy with non-descended testicle etc.), when I don't bother with USA-registration either. That USA-registration costs $ 40 each puppy: http://germanshepherddog.com/regulations/litter_registrations.htm It provides the new owners with so-called pink papers (Performance Breeding Pedigree (Addition)).
By the way, even if the breeder sends in the AKC registration, names the puppy and does a transfer of ownership later on the certificate, the AKC will allow a name change one more time later on. Here are the explanations: http://www.akc.org/reg/namingofdog.cfm

For the US bred litters, we register the litter and when the puppies go to their new owners, we register the puppy on line (name and kennel name) and have AKC send the registration directly to the new owner.
Part and parcel.

Ram,
When I buy a puppy I have no expectations about assigning the AKC registered name, other than the possibility to choose a name beginning with the litter letter. A lot of breeders follow a strict naming convention to better organize and keep track of their program. "A" litter von XYZ Haus, or some such. This is quite common.
When my husband received his Malinois from Ivan they had filled in the AKC registration application with "S____ ot Vitosha" because it was an "S" litter. Her registered name is Specialized ot Vitosha, but we call her "Ripley". I don't understand why some folks get such a hang up over the registered name of the dog. You can call it whatever you want. It's no different than the nicknames we use... if your parents would name you Joseph Robert Brown your friends might call you Joe or Rob or Bubba.
