My girl Virgo Von Ryan is 4 months old East German lines, she has a thick coat cause she is outside alot,
I was wondering if she was getting too wide, if you know what I mean, let me know what you guys think,
                       THANKS in advance
!

First I'll show you her emaciated half brother Theo,  ( Same dad different mom)  we tried to feed Theo his food today in
every room in the house, then finally when I let Sam in the house he gobbled down his food......
What a pain in the ..............  ,  but no he's a good boy............

Theo visited the nursing home today so he is pooped out!

This is Theo's half sister Virgo,

Virgo & her little lab friend

I think her butt is big....

I don't think Virgo is overweight.  The third picture of her clearly shows a defined ribcage followed by a defined waist.

Nice looking pup.  What makes you think she's overweight?

hard to tell by the pics.  a full standing profile could make it easier.  she still has a waste in the one from above.  but, in the one sitting she might look a little chunky.  but still hard to tell.  can you feel her ribs easily?

my god does she have tree trunk legs.

looking at the pics again, i think that her weight is fine.

And I am one who would say she is a little overweight, but yes, telling from a photo is difficult. My guess is that though she has a little bit of a WAIST (not waste), you probably cannot feel her ribs easily. I personally like to be able to see the faintest outline of the last rib when a dog is panting.

You have to be the judge. Vets are often going to tell you the dog is fine when, in fact, it is too heavy. A GSD is a working dog. If you intend to do anything with it, keep it lean. In the long run, that will serve the dog well.

On the other hand, feel free to email me for a photo of an emaciated dog.....Yes, not properly caring for a dog can cause them real harm as well. But then, any rational and caring person would know that.

Thanks you guys, for reassuring me, it's just that I think just cause it's winter time I need to feed her alot,
so that she doesn't feel the cold, she has been eating as much as my big dogs......

Thanks for a good hardy laugh, Rezkat5, (Tree trunk legs!) they are pretty solid, the vet made a remark
about her bones also, she loved the thickness.

Also FionaDunne,
Thanks for reassuring me, I think I am comparing her too much against her half brother Theo, who is a bit
thinner, and I actually have to make him eat.......  Virgo has a great appetite!

Hi Hodie,

Virgo is my 5th generation of breeding GSD's, here is a pic of Virgo & her aunt Dana, they both have
very big thick bones, I am so satisfied with how my dogs bone structure has increased, but I still want to
be careful that they don't develop hip problems, cause their bodies are so thick..

Here's Dana Von Ryans on the left with Virgo

 And Virgo pooped out!

The bone on the pup appears to be fine. Again, photos can be deceiving but I believe she is too heavy. But again, most people keep their dogs, especially their pets, way too heavy. The main thing is whether she has lots of energy and stamina. If so, She is probably ok. As a for instance, my females who are young generally do not get more than 4 dry measure cups of food per day when they are VERY active. This has been a very cold winter, so we have not been outside running as much as I would have wanted, and so most of my dogs are a little on the heavy side. But spring will soon be here and we will be back to being nice and lean again.

Good luck.

I too agree with Hodie that she could use a little trimming but nothing to extreme to say she is terribly obese. lol  My dogs tend to get a little "thicker" in the winter mainly because our weather does not allow us to get as much training in, exercise, walks are more limited as the dogs are kept indoors more.  They tend to slim down and get back to their ideal weight in the spring when we are all a bit more active.

I don't like a thin dog and even some of the sport dogs are a little leaner than I like my dogs kept but I like to see a nice formation.

We all pack on a few extra pounds over the winter months.  No worries spring isn't that far away.  Or is it???

I also think she is too heavy, though not "obese" and her type is "loose" - lots of loose skin and heavy-type of a dog.  Still, a little rounded IMO.  Hard to tell from the one picture but I'd say your "emaciated" Theo is about the right lean "fit" weight.
