I have seen this term grossly misused in some of the ads here (mostly under Studs and litters) and would like to clarify the definition of what an excellent pedigree is to enlighten the mis-informed.
Of course everyone may have some variation as to what it means depending on what variety GSD they prefer but below I will elaborate with my opinion.
People write this for one or two reasons, either they know their dog/litter does not have a good/great/excellent pedigree and are trying to mis-represent it to make a sale thinking they can fool some suckers, or people are just really don't know what makes a pedigree excellent and really think their dog/litter has one. I would like to see other's post their opinion as well.
If your dog/litter is not from titled parents--they do NOT have an *outstanding* pedigree
If the titled dogs are 3-4 generations back -- they REALLY do NOT have an outstanding pedigree
While I wanted to include the real working dogs in this statement, I do not believe, without titles they leave much of a mark on the pedigree itself, so I personally would not consider their contribution in the realm of oustanding unless they bring more to the table in the form of titles.
If your dog is washed out black and silver with 4-5 generations without titles or hip cert's YOUR DOG DOES NOT HAVE AN OUSTANDING PEDIGREE.
Some would even go further and not consider a dogs pedigree oustanding unless the parents are titled AND they are from or have TOP dogs close in the pedigree. TOP to me is VA for showlines, High scores or multiple titles (showing versatility...mostly seen in Czech dogs) for workinglines, or having hard to find dogs (Old pedigree) with and oustanding reputation for either production or accomplishments (in the form of titles/scores) IN the first 3-4 generations.
I am not getting into the breeding untitled dogs argument here, that is not the point...the point is...if you are...DON'T CALL THE PEDIGREE OUSTANDING.

Melanie

"If your dog/litter is not from titled parents--they do NOT have an *outstanding* pedigree"
If you really believe that, then why are you studding your dog out to untitled females? Most k-9 agencies will not even buy dogs from titled parents, at least not from parents that have more then a SchH I. I take a good dog from any untitled parent with a great pedigree for my agency any day.

I do not have a problem with breeding untitled bitches, and I AGREE with you. I have seen better untitled working bitches work than bitches with titles, that wasn't my point! What my point is, is what is it that makes a pedigree "oustanding".
Again I will say...

I have a problem with people mis representing what they have with deciteful intentions.

Melanie
I don't want to pile on you, but I have to ask.
What is a more outstanding pedigree?
1) Asko von der lutter son (untitled) x Tom Leefdalhof daughter (untitled)
OR
2) Cisko's Buttery Oiled Gem Sch1 KKl2 (only titled dog in pedigree) X Jen's Goo-Goo-Ga-Joob Sch 1 (titles 3 gens. back)

Sales patter is the same regardless of what is being sold.
One of my favourites from estate agents in the UK (realtors in the US?) is "compact & bijou" i.e. an over priced pokey little place.
Or from holiday reps, "10 minutes from the beach" i.e. if you're an olympic athelete.
Or from car salesmen "one careful lady owner", yeah right
So as always buyer beware & if they are taken in by an "outstanding pedigree" then more fool them. You can't legislate for idiots.

Don you are splitting hairs... but I'd go with #1 but still wouldn't call it **oustanding**...good/ nice perhaps...but again splittng hairs here. Thanks for the needling.
What inspired my post was one too many "oustanding's" where they were obviously NOT. Perhaps I got too specific in my definitions but I believe the term oustanding should not be used so frivelously.
Sorry I posted, just trying to help those suckers out there...I used to be one and fell hook line and sinker into a pile of CRAP.

I look closest at the produce record of the parents, grandparents, and those dogs' siblings first, along with the linebreeding. Of COURSE I expect all those dogs to have all titles, breed surveys, etc.

Don: It's a very clear choice - the 2nd OF COURSE because then you could name your dog Buttery Oiled Goo Goo and that would have to superced the fact that pups from the 1st choice would be better workers...
