took a bitch a couple of months ago from a breeder in hard times....she is a very dark bi color American line dog....and was bred to a black sable DDR male. She had a litter of ten, all bi color or black/tan, many with white toes or paws, chest spots, and a two with white tail tips. They are now five weeks old. I am somewhat concerned with their ear placement and size. The ears look very large and low set. Is this normal? Or do you think these puppies are mixed breeds? I did not witness the mating, so I can't say for sure, but am considering having the litter DNA'd before registering or placing them. I've never bred an American line dog and I've never had puppies with ears this large. They are now five weeks old. These are just pictures of a few of them...some have larger ears than others....What do you think? Should I be concerned?

Wow. hard to say. If I saw these puppies in the pound and didn't know anything about the parents, I'd probably guess mixed breed - mainly due to the ears (yes, too low-set and round in shape for most GSD pups I've seen) but also due to the VERY short coats. Maybe Doberman mix? Or...hate to say it - Beagle?

I hope you are not serious, except I think you are. These are definitely NOT normal GSD pup ears. I think you have a litter of mixed breed pups.

I do believe they are mixed breed, but the breeder I got the dam from swears the only dog that bred her was the GSD male. I just don't see how that's possible. She says the American dogs produce puppies with larger ears that are lower set than European bred dogs. I felt like this was a line of BS, but wanted some other opinions before I came back at her about it. I had intentions of whelping the dam, spaying and placing her in a pet home, but now I also have a litter of mixed breed puppies to place, which is quite a task in our area. I believe these puppies may be some sort of hound mix, as the breeders husband had coonhounds he used for hunting. This was what first made me suspicious when the puppies were smaller...they looked funny then too, but not nearly so obviously mixed as they do now. I'm not going to waste money on DNAing them, as it seems everyone else shares my opinion. This is a very frustrating situation...placing puppies is hard enough when they are good pedigree'd purebreds....but now we're talking mixed breeds.... :(

Honestly, do you think I should have a DNA test done? Or does it seem clear enough that they are mixed breed not to bother? I really don't know what to do....DNA for all possible parents and puppies will be over $500...do you think there is a chance that some of these puppies are purebred?

I remember a thread you started when the pups were younger. They are awful cute but I think you would be wasting your money on an AKC DNA test kit. The first pic the pup looks like he/she "might" be all GSD, but the other pics sort of went south from there. Wish ya luck!

Only DNA the one that looks like he has hound ears and maybe the supposed dad. There is that test that will tell you what type of dog you have, all the mixes involved-it's pretty cool-you could do just one puppy. Do that test first then you won't have to worry about the actual dna test.
They are to die for cute though.
