I bought some AVID Euro chips with re-loadable syringes to micro-chip my dogs and pups. I have been having my vet micro-chip my dogs and pups for me as he does it for free when I take the pups in for their health exams. I ordered the AVID Euro bulk micro-chips which come in a container of 25 chips. I took the litter of pups in at 7 weeks and had them all chipped. He scanned each chip to make sure it worked before inserting it and then scanned each pup to make sure that the chip was indeed in the dog and working properly. I watched him insert each chip and he seemed to have done it correctly and had no trouble. The next day I scanned each pup at home with my scanner and I couldn't find the chip on one of the pups. I scanned his whole body and still couldn't find the chip. I took him into the vet and had them scan the pup thinking that maybe something was wrong with my scanner, even though it scanned all the other pups chips fine. They couldn't find the chip either. I then had then rechip him along with having them chip one of my older pups who hadn't been chipped yet. Same procedure was done on both pups as was done the first time the litter was micro-chipped. Later that day I tried to scan both pups and could find neither chip. Took them both back into the vet the next day had them scan each pup and could find no chip in either dog. Had the youngest pup x-rayed to see if they could see any chips and could find at least one of the two chips. The chip looks intact, not broken just doesn't seem to scan. Had both pups re-chipped. Same procedure done to re-inject both chips. A couple hours later decided to scan pups to make sure that the chips would scan. The older pups micro-chip scans, so I think it will be ok but I cannot find the chip again on the younger pup. He has now been micro-chipped 3 times. I was just wondering if anyone else has bought the bulk micro-chips from AVID and if they have had problems like this. We cannot figure out what is going wrong as we are following the directions exactly. And why are are having so many problems with this one pup?

Last year I had my pup's breeder microchip her with a chip from a 5 pk. I bought from AVID, then after being shown, I microchipped my older dogs. Recently, when she was getting her eyes done for CERF, they couldn't find a chip on her anywhere, but all the rest had theirs.
I figured she must have worked it out after being implanted as she was playing around right after. I never thought that they just wouldn't scan, and of course I didn't have her x-rayed to find it. So I don't know what actually happened to it (if it is still implanted or not) but in the future I'm always going to be very careful about having the dog rescanned a couple of weeks later to make sure it is securely in place.

There are several types of chips and one must either have a true universal reader, and most people do not, or a reader specific for Euro chips. The chips should have been tested BEFORE insertion. It is highly unlikely that if they were working initially before they were put in, that they are broken unless something was done in the process of chipping to ruin the chip. Is that possible, I suppose, but it would be darn hard to ruin a chip.
Scan before insertion, scan immediately after. If the reader works initially, it should work when inserted.

Both my vet and I have universal scanners so they are able to read the Euro chip. All chips have been scanned before being implanted and after being implanted and all have scanned fine, which is why I am so puzzled as to why this one pup has been micro-chipped 3 times and still he will not scan.

I always scan the chip BEFORE I insert it into the pup just to make sure the chip number matches all the paper work and to make sure the chip is working!!!

I had this happen with my last litter. We chipped all the pups at home when we tattooed them. I brought home a universal scanner from work and they were all located with correct numbers. A couple of weeks later all the pups went to the vet for health certs and the chips all were still identified. Pups went home with owners and one of the owners vet tried several scanners and none of them could locate the chip. They had the same scanner I have at work.
This has happened a couple of other times with the Avid chip at work ( I run the local shelter). We recently switched to the HomeAgain company, for shelter benefits, and so far we haven't had any issues.
Avid has replaced the chips that for whatever reason no longer functioned.
