When an accidental breeding occurred, what is the best option to abort the litter? Spaying the female is not an option.

If she wasn't given a "morning after" shot than I believe spaying is your only option. This shot is only good for so many hours after the breeding.

If it has just occured, you may want to have the vet give a massive dosage of estrogen. What this does is will start the heat cycle over from the beginning, aborting the pups in the process. I don't know if this is still practiced or not, but I did it 20 years ago, when I walked in the house and found my pair tied together and it worked.

I just found an article on the subject and they actually don't recommend the estrogen shot anyway as it can cause damage to the uterus for future litters. Here's the article and they are doing 2nd trimester terminations now. I learn something new everyday:) http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_pregnancy_termination.html

Aye! if ye keep doggies it be best t' keep a bottle o' t' clear depo o' "Dexamethasone" handy aye. an injured dog goin' into shock me gives 8cc in t' neck immediately aye. saved t' neighbor's dog when it was hit by car on HWY just last week aye. T' terminate a pregnancy ye need t' dose t' bitch 28 days into pregnancy for a week aye. Ye can use oral or depo either one. T' bitch will abort or dissolve t' pups with no future harm t' her Aye. Me seen t' orals in 2mg and 6mg tabs Aye Cheapest and t' safest method b' far Aye

Captain Mike is right! I have also seen it done with pills and it works! Worked for a vet that we had done it several times with no ill after effects!

The safest thing to do is let the puppies (if there are any) be born. Pet them out or cull them if your primary concern is the future fertility of the bitch. I am aware of a maltese breeder who had a mother/daughter accident and went on to sell the pups as breeding dogs (he is a CLASS ACT! obviously), and while while they were not ever going to be used for breeding b/c of that pedigree, they are fine pets.
I am aware of a dog who the original owner used the mismate shot and the next time the dog was bred (new owner), emergency c-section resulting in dead puppies and emergency spay. Perhaps that dog's owner will chime in.

YEAH, My vet was of the opinion any reputable vet would not use the morning after shot if the dogs owner has any plans on future breedings with the dog. The hormone shot can really mess a female up.
I fully believe my female would be fine if she had not been given the shot. but DO understand why she was given the shot too. She scaled a 6 foot concrete divider to jump in with her sire. She is 3,4 on Mink, and bred back to her Leerburg sire, those would have been some monster puppies who probably wouldn't have a place in most homes.
really think about what your future plans are with the female.
if your dogs aren't related, I would let them have the litter and sell the pups has pets.
