What is your opinion on feeding raw chicken?

by Angela Kovacs on 22 January 2008 - 13:01

love it. For the dogs of course.

I have been feeding raw since 1996 and whelping litters on raw since 1993.

Chicken is no problem, bone in as well as long as it is not cooked.

I've been feeding the whole backs, wings, leg quarters, breast w/ribs, livers, gizzard and hearts for more than 20 years with no problems at all.  It's pretty much the basis of most raw-food diets because it's inexpensive and nutritional.

Raw chicken - as in just the muscle meat - should be fed sparingly.  Without the bone matter it can cause diahrrea if the dog is fed too much.

Some German Shepherds can have problems with Beef...and even my dry food is now all chicken based...But about 2 times a month I cut up fresh chicken and feed my dogs some in with their dry food...It's a real treat for them and it's extremely good for them too...With puppies...as soon as they can start to eat solid foods and have enough teeth to chew...I begin adding a few pieces of raw chicken for them too...I just limit the number and size of bones as much as possible...I do however give them cartilage...this has everthing in it that is needed for a growing puppy...

My wife has Yorkies and Papillons and they even get some of the raw chicken...I just have to be very careful on the bones and their sizes...and the sizes of the pieces of chicken...I try and cut them up pretty small for them....just so they have a little bit to chew on and can digest...and then pass without any problems...

Many years ago a GreyHound Breeder and racer told me about feeding raw chicken to my dogs and all the good that can come from it...Then I was training a dog for a Research Doctor and he told me the same thing...as a matter of fact one of my German Shepherds had real problems with beef based foods...and feeding him raw chicken saved his life...

I feed raw chicken all of it to my dogs along with several other species.

My last pup was weaned on chicken wings.

Just fed my Gunner a 10 month old GSD raw chicken legs for the first time of course he loved them ate them bone and all.  No problem. I was concerened with the bones watched him real close  He gobbled them down without a problem.

First time I gave him raw meat on the bone.    I have feed him before raw ground beef and raw Buffalo,Elk and Venison all with  the bone removed.

I am going to try other raw chicken parts now.  Since my first venture was so sucessfull.

Larrydee:

Did you mean "gulping" when you said "gobbled them down" or was he chewing them first?

He needs to chew them.  At his age I'd give the whole leg quarter (whole as in not cut up into leg and thigh pieces) so that he has to "chew".

You may already know that but I thought it was worth mentioning.

I feed raw chicken parts except the legs and thighs...because my dogs are high food drive,,,very high,,,they tend to almost swallow whole....too  much bone for my kids...they get necks, wings, backs , hearts , all others   and calves liver, pork neck bones,,,calves heart, hamburger...and deer meat...with bones....if after 30 minutes all is not eaten ,,in the garbage it goes...

One women emailed me and laughed because her female gsd was buring his kidney , and his raw meat, and later digging it up and carrying the kidney all over the place...

I came unglued, and couldnt get her the message fast enough,,,,,stop letting her do that...never let dog take raw meat and bury it to eat later....feed in closed area so you monitor their eating habits.....she was shocked ,,she didnt know it was dangerous..and ecoli and salmonila prone...duh.....
