Why would you ever want an american bred dog for family??????????? Go to do-behave .com, he is in connecticut!  phone is 203-232-8018, dont waste your money and time on an amercian dog!

How about you purchase what you wanna purchase and let dee decide what she wants to purchase. Maybe an Am Bred isn't what you want, BUT it is what Dee is asking for...........   No dog from a GOOD breeder is a waste of money.

Dee I know of of a few in PA and NJ

Amen, Gypsyrose. My 100% German import isn't the world's greatest dog by any means. The Am lines GSD down the street has a much better temperament.

Amen again.  Not my personal choice either but it's customary for the buyer to decided what he or she wants.

I believe they are in western New Jersey and have the AmBred's you are looking for.

Good luck in your search!

What we would call "American Bred" is getting better and better all the time...with all the quality stock that's now in the US and more knowledge in knowing which lines to breed together...There are some very quality pups/dogs being bred here...You just need to have a little knowlege of what you're looking for and at...but the same is true in European stock...

The real thing is knowledge...the more you know about what it is that is involved the better off you are at picking out what it is you really want...So ask all the questions you have and try to find people around that will help you to know what to look for and what your actually looking at...Not all German dogs are good....and Not all American dogs are bad...So do your homework and be knowledgable...

~Bob~

P.S. Depending on what your looking for...either Showlines or Worklines...I know of some very nice breeders and puppies that will be available in your area...If interested contact me and I will give you their information...

I would also recommend Alkarah for an AmBred pup in your area.  I've seen the owners posts on another board and she is passionate about her dogs.  You may get a better response on that board.  http://www.germanshepherds.com

The constant bashing of other lines is getting tiresome.  True I wouldn't buy another American dog after having my German working lines, but I do own a wonderful American girl that I purchased 10 years ago.  Best family dog ever and smart as a whip to boot!

Maybe you all are missing the point and Dee is actually looking for an American bred GSD of show or working lines such as Teejay von Wilhendorf, just black and tan instead of black and red.

If so,  go to www.wilhendorf.com.

dee,

I'm not sure what you are looking for since you asked about American bred.  The term American bred isn't necessarily the same as the term American line. There are several types that are bred in America and I'm wondering if there is a confusion of terminology.  Perhaps this is all information that you already know and if so I apologize and meant no insult. But on the chance that it's something you're not familiar with I'll offer it.

To begin with there are Showlines and Working lines.  Some time back there was a split in breeding practices where part of focused on certain characteristics geared to showing and some focused on characteristics geared to working.  Though there is a certain amount of overlap in those characteristics.  If you look through ads on the PDB you'll see some for Showline and some for Working line.

There are different "lines" that are bred in America. A line is a fairly steady gene pool of dogs with traits that conform to the ideal or interpretation of what that line should be like. Certain line characheristics are peculiar to the country from which that line originates not from where that line is bred.  For example, if I breed West German Showline dogs, I did not have to get them from W Germany but I would be perpetuating the characteristics of that line by breeding only decendents from the W. German Showline dogs.  Same for American lines, both show and working.

So this is where we are left:  In America there are breeders of W. German (descent) Show and Working lines, American (descent) Show and Working lines, East German (descent), Czech (descent),  the list goes on and on.

The key is research. If I had it to do again to buy my first well thought out GSD I would post a thread on this board and ask those with first hand knowledge of the pro's and con's of each line to contact me through pm with pro's and con's of the line. Also, perhaps breeders whom they had gotten their dogs through. Then research that breeder.

I know it sounds like an awful lot of work and it is. Believe me it's worth it.  The most important thing to remember is a good dog is a good dog as long as it's healthy.

Good luck in your search.

If you are looking for American lines, I'll second Alkarah Kennels. They also have bred to at least one imported dog in the past and they are absolutely not prejudiced against imports. I've been to their kennel - nice dogs, nice people.
