New to the board and planning purchasing a GSD what type of lines to purchase DDR CZECH or West working i'm looking mainly for a personal protection dog but would also like to join the Schutzhund Club in my area. Any sound advice from the experts on here. I would like a dog that would do sport but also react under a real situation.

My best advise is for you to go to ALL the schutzhund clubs in your area.  By getting to know the members and their dogs you will start to form a working knowledge of what will suit you best.   If you can befriend the various members, someone will be kind enought to  take you under their wing and help you learn so that you can pick the dog that's right for you.  There are good and bad in all three, as well as showlines, and no one of them is always better for pp or for sport.

Nothing beats research no easy answer such as country of origin. Are the types so much different?   Yes in some dogs No in others.   If you have not discovered DDR legends it is a great site specific about the old bloodlines or Leerburg for info on West German and Jinopo for Czech. Talk to breeders are they talking about the same characteristics you want ? The more GSD's you really look at and see them work  the more you get an idea for what  you would love to spend your time with. You like 100% pure bloodline they do produce the more consistent results but an outcross can produce outstanding results if done by a breeder who really knows their lineages.  If you search a pedigree they will all go back to the same roots and many so called pure lines now are from the same foundations whose pups have cris-crossed borders for many years and so it is more about every grandparent in the pedigree that gives you the characterisitics than the country

sueincc I think hit the nail on the head and did it very tactfully.  I agree Frankie needs some knowledge first and foremost about the breed and whats involved before running out to buy a dog.

Dragongsd....  your just shameless with you for sale sign and website post.  There is a market place section for posting your website and what you have for sale.

strongbond does give good info as well.

Good luck Frankiegsd,  I know you will benifit from all this and join in the gsd world .

Frankie GSD this link is to the illustrated standard of the GSD by Linda Shaw published in Schutzhund USA Magazine. Breed Types will give you photos and an overview of the different types. Comparison of types is al ittle more in-depth break down of the difference in structure and other physical traits.  Figuring out which has the best working traits will be alot tougher it is also argued about frequently on GSD forums.  good luck http://www.shawlein.com/The_Standard/Index_Page/Index_Page.htm
