If a female is still bleeding on the date that she ties what does that mean? From my understanding when females breed they have normally stopped spotting. Also is it common to have to hold a bitch in order to get a tie?

Two of the best ways to know when to breed a maiden bitch is a progesterone test and an experienced stud. Having to hold a female is common especially a maiden or alpha. I could also be that she is not ready, especially if blood is still present. Most of my females did not read the book and are not ready to breed until after day 15. Good Luck,
Kyle

my girl is like that too around day 15 seems to be her mark. My male has never been used, but consistently on those days are when he is most crazy and when she is standing the most for the other spayed female in the house. LOL
First time around I did progesterone testing for shits and giggles and that was right on the mark too. So, at least I know if and when what will work!

If the female is standing for the male and the male is interested enough to breed while blood is still present. It means it's early to me. Generally the blood goes from red to pink to straw prior to the female being ready.
It's not uncommon to restrain the female for mating. Some will test the male or otherwise show aggression towards the male and be reluctant to breed. Yes, It's the same with dogs as with,,,,well let's just say all females are not willing initially. If left alone, most will sort things out. This may be after an altercation where a body part is damaged or missing. Again, just like,,,,,,well, sometimes it's not pretty to have your stud male or show female minus half an ear. So human intervention is generally accepted and warranted until the tie is complete. Once the pair is tied for 20 minutes or so, the female is usually calmed down and is quite content. Again, similar to,,,well lets just say after 20 or 30 minutes they figure out it wasn't so bad after all.
Now all you have to do is wait until the tie is over. I generally wrap a leash between the hips of both animals to hold them in place so they don't drag each outer around. It's the least I would want if I were in the same situation, so I feel it's the right thing to do.
Once the tie is over I usually put the female up immediately. Again, Oops better not go there. Expect her back in a couple days acting like she didn't enjoy the first expierience. Don't be fooled. She won't be as hard to mate the second time. Again,,,,,.
Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone for your responses. Last question, so if she is still bleeding and a 40 minute tie occurs does that mean she won't take? it was day 13 the next time to try would be day 15.

don't worry about if she's still bleeding some of them do that, just breed her again on day 15 and maybe 17 if she is receptive. She may be early, may not. Whether she is bleeding has nothing to do with if she takes. They are all different.

My female has spotted bright red the day her progesterone peaked, and conceived. I always go by the blood test since she is tricky like that. Every dog is different.
