I am looking around at crates and am a little confused of what size to get. My male is large, not oversized, and will only be in his crate riding in the car and while at training. Would a 500 work do you think?

My male is around 80 pounds and a 500 works well for him.  A 400 is too small, I have my females in a 400 vari kennel.

Thank you! It is difficult for me to be able to tell. I can't take him into the store as none of the crates are assembled on display!

You are welcome!  Although for awhile due to space constrictions in the car my boy was in one of those midwest double door crates.  I think that the length on it was like 36 inches.  So that is somewhere in between the 400 and 500.  He did OK in it, but it was a bit too small.  His ears used to poke out the top very nicely, and would sometimes scratch the top of his head.  Although, he's even does that in the taller one being an idiot!  Now, he's in upgraded accomadations 42 inches long and 30 inches.  He's lost some on the width but can still turn around.  :)  It's one of those midwest SUV crates.  His house crate is the 500 vari kennel and I have used them before in the car.

A 500 Vari-Kennel should be fine.

The dimensions of the one I ended up getting is for a 26" dog. 25"Wx 27"Hx 36"L. The girl didn't know what a '500' was, so I hope he will be comfortable in this one.

was it a vari kennel?

the 500 is their extra large

the 400 is their large.

I think that you may have gotten the 400.  LOL, clueless store help sometimes.  But, I guess the newbies don't refer to them that way anymore!

Im not to sure youll be happy with that size crate that size is rather small and you want him to be able to stand up and actually turn around.  I would recommend the midwest  48 x 30 x 33
