by iluvmyGSD on 10 January 2008 - 20:01

well....he DID it !!!!

i FINALLY  taught boss the concept of "heel"  lol.....

i want to thank eveyone who posted on my "is it time for a prong collar ?" thread...everyones advice helped in one way are another...

on that thread two moons had said--- he is not getting enough leash work---

i wanted to slap myself in the forehead.......duh!!.... i have a pretty large yard, about 4 acres...so when i let him out of his kennel, i just let him run around off leash, get excercise mainly just by playing in the yard.....i usually only put a leash on him when walking down the road...which i only "maybe" get a chance to do once a week...therefore ---not enough time on the leash......and of course i can't 'TEACH" him to not pull when we are ON the road, it's to many new smells, sights...etc....he wouldn't stop pulling long enough on the road for me to get a chance to praise him when he was in the right position.....so for the past three days, still only using the choke collar (havent had a chance to get a prong)....when i take him out of his kennel, i have been walking him all around the yard on the leash for at least 30 mins......he would pull at first, but everytime he started pulling i would stop and not move....like yellowrose said...keep doing that over and over.....when he finally started walking beside me without pulling, you should have seen the look on his face when i was actually able to praise him!!...lol..he jerked his head up and was like WTF?...what am i getting praised for? im just standing here?....i started walking again...he pulled-i stopped-said no- started walking again- he does it right (looking at me waiting for me to say no) and i praise him again....like i said before, you can just see the excitement go thro his body when something a "command" finally clicks....

so we have been doing that everyday for the past three days.....he still pulls a little at first (mainly cause he's gotta pee and he's in a hurry to find a pee spot)..but the amount of time from pulling to heeling is getting less and less....

but what im most excited about...is today i decided to take it a step futher....after walking around for a while, practicing on-leash...i let him loose and picked up a few sticks.....he is VERY toy driven (sticks being the toy) i threw the sticks a few times for him...then i took one held up to my chest and told him to heel...everytime i've tried this before he will go a few feet but then start jumping on me trying to get the stick/toy...this time i left his coke collar on and held the loop while he walked beside me, everytime he tried to jump at me i jerked down and tapped him WITH the stick while saying NO!...i only had to do this TWICE!!!..once again i saw realization click in him....lol...within min. he was wlking beside me,VERY tight even on turns, eyes glued to me.... i'd stop, make him sit then down...then id throw the stick for reward......after he'd get the stick, i would pick up another, and all the way across the yard yell "heel"...and he would run over and do it!...i can actually see him zone in on my left side when he is coming towards me to get in position....

i wish i could upload videos, but my dial-up is to slow...no, its not perfect yet but i think he did damn good for just learning this.....

i know it might be silly for alot of you, but i have never trained a dog and i thought i would never be able to teach him to do this...so i am pretty excited and proud of him...

thanks again for the help everyone..

Congrat's IluvmyGSD!!

May I offer a suggestion....If you let him run about a bit and take care of business first (Even Play a bit)....then leash him and work him on the "Heel" you might find him even more willing to work and please you. Herr Holtzmann always told me to play and have fun with my GS.....then after he has taken care of business and had a qiuck drink....then work him/her. I found his advice to be very sound and always applied it. I'm no expert or "Pro" like many of these folk's...but  just thought I would let you know from my experience...Hope it helps.....Again CONGRAT's to you and your GS.

mAXBEAR:    YOU TOOK THE WORDS OUT OF MY TYPE....YES    ILUVMIDOG,   CONGRATS....LET HIM GO PEE AND PLAY A BIT  , THEN TAKE HIM TO A PART OF YOUR PLACE AND DO THE FUSS AND PRACTICE......ITS NOT FAIR TO TAKE HIM  OUT OF KENNEL AND NOT GO PEE AND RUN A FEW...

ALSO,    DO THE SAME TRAINING EVERY DAY......SAME ROUTINE.....HEEL   WALK WALK AND JUST KEEP SOMETHING AT YOUR CHEST LEVEL AND MAKE HIM LOOK UP AT IT.....IT HES EYES LOOK DOWN,,,,SHAKE IT, OR SHOW HIM AT HIS FRONT LEVEL AND QUICKLY RAISE IT BACK TO CHEST LEVEL    MOVE IT A BIT TO KEEP HIS EYES ON IT.....AND THEN STOP SITZ   AND PRAISE.....USE WHATEVER HE LIKES AT YOUR CHEST TO KEEP HIS EYES ON YOUR CHEST AREA AND AFTER A MONTH OF THAT  YOU CAN START REMOVING THE OBJECT......KEEP THE LEASH ON HIM....DON T GET THE CART BEFORE THE HORSE,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,HE IS NOT READY FOR OFF LEASH  .....HAVE TO PERFECT THE ON LEASH BEFORE LETTING HIM TAKE A CHANCE OF MAKING MISTAKES AND GETTING CONFUSE.......

i KNOW YOU ARE PROUD ..........KEEP LEASH CLOSE AND DO THE TURN INTO HIM AND THEN THE TURN TO THE RIGHT.....SHORT LEGS AND THEN START GOING LONGER LIKE    50 PACES THEN SITZ      TURN AROUND AND SITZ    START AGAIN AND WHEN YU SEE HIM LAG .,,,SHAKE THE TOY AND DO ALL THIS WITH AN UP BEAT   ATTITUDE,......A LITTLE LATER START A SLOW RUN....MAKE HIM KEEP UP...AND STOP SUDDENLY AND SITZ AND A LITTLE TUG OR CORRECTION IF HE DOESNT SIT IMMED.....THE EXACT SECOND HE DOES HIS SITZ   REWARD WITH THE FOOD TREAT,,,,,,,DO THESE ROUTINES FOR 30 MINUTES...IF HE GETS BORED   QUIT ON A GOOD NOTE.,.,,,IF HE DID THE LAST TWENTY PACES RIGHT..,,,,,STOP AFTER THE REWARD AND PRAISE ,,,TAKE HIM BACK TO PLAY TIME AND PUT HIM IN A CRATE FOR 30 MINUTES TO THINK ,,,,,,LET OUT AND PRAISE HIM TILL THE CLOUDS HEAR YOUR VOICE.....HEEL AND FUSS ARE THE WORDS HE SHOULD HEAR WHILE YOU ARE WALKING WITH HIM BESIDE YOU AND WHILE YOU ARE TRAINING......REMEMBER    START OFF ON YOUR LEFT FOOT EVERY TIME.......HE SEES THE FOOT GO FORWARD AS YOU SAY   HEEL       ALWAYS START OFF WITH THE LEFT FOOT.....HE WILL LEARN , FOR LATER THE LEFT FOOT GOES, I GO....OK   ..... GOOD WORK.....KEEP IT UP .,,,,,   BUT STAY WITH THE LEASH FOR YOUR WORK PERIOD.S.....HES NOT READY FOR OFF LEASH.....BECAUSE NEXT   YOUR GONNA PRACTICE THE DOWN AND THEN   DOWN IN MOTION....BUT THAT IS LATER.......

I think that you need to get your team to a Schutzhund Club!...gawd i wish....

thanks for the comments and the advice everyone........

maxbear and yellowrose..............i was thinking the same myself....atleast about the peeing part....i wasn't sure about the playing....was thinking work was suppose to come before play.....then use play as a reward for working??....but now i know....so i will def let him play first....

yellowrose....REMEMBER    START OFF ON YOUR LEFT FOOT EVERY TIME.......HE SEES THE FOOT GO FORWARD AS YOU SAY   HEEL ---thank you!! hadnt heard that before...but will try it tomorrow...

i thought fuss and down meant the same thing??

as far as the sit-down-stay...he has that pretty much down pact........he will do any, VERY quickly, almost to quickly sometimes, before i can get the whole word out of my mouth...he will do ANYTHING for me to throw a toy, as long as he knows what im asking...when it's something new and he doesnt understand right away he gets anxious and inpatient with me...and thats when the jumping starts..wich was the main problem...but i think i have that cured........but this is why i would like to use a toy instead of food....he will loose interest sooner with food...but if i use a toy he NEVER looses interest...as long as i have that toy, his eyes never leave me and he will play/work well after we are both wore out....looking like he's gonna fall over dead he still wants me to throw it ...so how do i train on-leash with a toy? i can't throw it for reward, if he is on leash...he would jerk my arm off...lol..

which brings me to another question......when i throw a toy for him, he goes for it full force and full speed....usually he hits/gets the toy with such force that he will flip, twist, slam into the ground so hard that he tears the grass up with skid marks....today after doing that he looked like he was favoring his front foot a little...coulda been my imagination-just cause it looks painful, i cringe everytime....but i am worried about his safety..........is there anyway i could stop him from hitting so hard?....prob not huh.?.....is that even something i should want to discourge?...is it any indication to how hard he would hit a sleeve if ...(no not if!) "when" i start schutzhund with him?
