I just wrote a major paper on stem cell research and cloning issues. There are incredible and very promising advances in this field. This same technology is also being used in humans and shows great promise to relieve suffering in animals and humans.

I saw this on the news last night, where they took the stem cells out of a Golden, using his fat, and in just a short few weeks he was a different dog. I think this is fantastic, about time and way better then hip replacments. Norma

There is a company out there that has been doing stem cell research and trials for quite some time now.

http://www.vet-stem.com/

Arboretum View Animal Hospital has a few vets there that have been participating in the study for a few years now.  My holistic vet there says it's shown great improvements in many of the dogs.  I was asked to participate with my female with HD a year or so ago, but just wasn't sure enough.  There were a lot of requirements that had to be followed.  Regular bloodwork and xrays over a three month span .  With my female being nine, I wasn't sure I wanted her knocked out so often for xrays and removal of the fat for the stem cells.  They wanted video of the dogs progress as well.  The dog has to be 100% healthy otherwise, and she ended up with a grade one peripherial nerve sheath tumor, so I'm not sure she'd even be allowed to participate anymore.

It does sound promising for otherwise healthy dogs.

Tiago:  Thank you for the link, I've added it to my "favorites" and will provide it to anyone who is looking for all options available for arthritic dogs.

this is such hopeful news. as the owner of a dog who was diagnosed with hd (very mild), it gives me hope that, maybe, someday, should i need it, i can have this treatment for my dog. thanks for bringing this to the board.
