Prompted by some old threads I was looking through Quanto’s pedigree & came across the VA Alf vom Nordfelsen

http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/841.html

To my eyes a great looking dog! Splendid angulation & balance between front & rear & his straight but sloping top line looks almost ‘modern’ in appearance – although I’m not entirely sure if this is due to the angle the photograph was taken from.

But one thing that did immediately stand out for me was this guy’s splendid paws - rounded, compact & displaying great strength. Almost like a Dobermans & very different from what I can see on a lot of today’s dogs who’s paws, especially the front, seem to be much less rounded & taut in comparison.

Or is it just a case that Alf is standing on hard tarmac & pretty much all photos of modern dogs have them standing on soft turf?

Gawd, re-reading the above it sounds like I’ve got some weird foot fetish but any comments gratefully received.

i look at feet too, but i don't think it's a fetish... lol.

i have 2 kirschental dogs with nice compact feet, and their feet look like that regardless of the surface on which they are standing.

i have commented on this in previous threads as well.  the more "cat-like" the foot is........the better i like it.  it makes a huge difference in how well the dog holds up.  just as in humans, if there is no spring there and the foot goes flat on contact, it  will take its toll on the rest of the body.

Totally agree with you pjp... but is that not how the paws should be according to the standard? i.e. "The feet are relatively round, short, tightly formed and arched."

Are there any lines around at the moment that have such feet - show or working?

Handsome dog.  I would be curious to know what type of show rating this dog would recieve today.
