If you buy a dog who's AKC papers were never turned in and the papers were lost, is there any way to register the dog with the AKC? Is it possible to get replacement papers?  I am looking at a female who was left with a friend of the owner, now the owner has lost the papers, is there any chance I can get papers on this female?  Thanks so much!

I assume you mean the puppy registration application was not sent in with the new owner's information, for actual registration papers?

The breeder of the dog may be able to obtain the papers.  I have filed for replacement puppy registration application papers for a buyer who lost theirs somehow when the pup was about six months old.  I managed to get the paper replaced for her and she registered her dog.

If these are puppy registration application papers that were lost, and you do not have the help of the breeder, you are out of luck..  Find the breeder and you might be able to get the puppy papers.

To do the transaction the proper way, you will also need transfers of ownership for every owner between the breeder and you.

you say the papers were never turned in. never turned in by whom? were the papers in this owners name? if so then all you would have to do is have the owner  send in for replacement papers. if the owner of the pup wasn't the breeder and they never changed the reigstration out of the breeders name then they would have to have the breeder send for the replacement paperwork. if the dog, when purchased as a pup, came with a filled out registration that the new owner was to turn in then they would have to talk with the breeder and get the paperwork re-filled out and then all you would have to do is turn it in to the AKC with the fee.

It is $15.00 to get an app replaced so be prepared to pay the breeder......the breeder is the only one that can help you in this situation......do you know where the pup came from ?

You can get an ILP number for the dog if you're willing to spay her.   If the dog is over a year old and you can get the registration paperwork from the breeder, be prepared to pay a late registration fee!

I don't know who the breeder is so odds are I would never see the papers, right?

NWilz: you said that a friend of the owner has the dog now. so obviously they are selling the dog for the owner. so have these people get you in touch with the owners so the 2 of you can talk. these owners should know the breeder they bought the dog from. have them do a little leg work since they lost the papers. have them get with the breeder and resolve the issue. if they can't do this then i'd think something was fishy. if you really like the dog and are looking for just a pet and don't want to use for sprot, show or breeding then don't worry about the papers and buy the dog. but i wouldn't pay anymore than the going rate for an unpapered GSD that you could find in your local newspaper.

If you know his sire and dams name (from vet records) then you should be able to find the breeder. Lost papers can be reissued only to the registered owner. If he was never registerd as a puppy then only the breeder can get akc registration papers for you.

NWilz, sometimes puppies are not paid for completely, or there are other reasons why getting the papers may be a hassle for you.  But maybe they just simply lost them, too.  The owner should remember who the breeder was, and be able to track her or him down for you, or maybe you could ask for a price reduction if you have to do the leg/phone work yourself.
