Just yesterday, the local station WTNH in New Haven, CT, put out a call for GSD DONATIONS , meaning a puppy up to 2 and onel half years old, for their police training programs. In the 15 sec. sound bite, and list of four requirements, the last was : NO AGGRESSION issues.
My question to any of you who care to bite, does this have anything to do with the "bite"?.

Oh golly, guess not, but no one's going to give them a free solid nerved dog for nothin' DUH! But just in case you have an extra GSD dog that needs a purpose, we can help you get there. ~Deb

Beetree,
Theirs nothing wrong into donating puppies or young dogs to their local police departments. Do you have any idea how much the tax payers have to pay to buy these trained/green police dogs? I'm sure most are imports if I haven't been mistaken. Hell If I had a litter on the ground, I would rather give (donation) a couple to my local police department rather then to sell them to a wealthy person whos plans are to turn the pup to a pet.

And Brittany those poor puppies of yours who is going to raise them for the 18 months it takes to grow them out and civilize them and put some obedience and basics in them ( not the speciality training that comes AFTER all this is done) and what happens to them if they don't pan out either because they didn't have the stuff or whoever was raising them was an utter fool w/ no knowledge on how to do it?
And don't come back w/ the police of course . 1. Most (including the k9 officers) have no clue about effectively training a dog and 2. they have all those spare moments after a shift and court hours and family, extra duty for extra pay, mandatory details required by the city for special events etc etc

The CT State Police will only use donated dogs, they have NO fund to purchase dogs unless the individual Trooper pays for the dog and donates it to the State for use. BUT, if the handler does this and he himself doesn't pass training and the dog does, guess what? The dog moves on and that Trooper looses the dog.
I have donated many dogs to them over the years and, duh, some of us are not only breeding to sell for money and actually care about their dogs going to working homes. Personally, I hold one puppy per breeding to be donated as either a SAR, Patrol, or Assistant Dog depending on the puppy.
The CT State Police are begging for dogs for a January class and the dogs must be 12 months (preferably 18 months) to 2 1/2 (though they have taken up to 3 yrs when desperate).

(WTNH) _ State police are looking for a few good dogs. The Canine Training Unit is actively recruiting suitable dogs for donation to the force.
State police are looking for male German Shepherds between 18 months and two and a half years old. The the dogs have to have a good temperament, with no aggression issues, and be in good health.
If you would like to donate a puppy you can contact the Canine Training Unit at (203) 630-5656.
(Here is the contact info, that some have asked for via email), thought I might share it for all.)

Gee, The same thing happens as when you sell a puppy as a Pet that should have been a working dog and it comes back because the family who raised him for 18 months didn't know what they were doing. I don't care if it is a pet home, Police/SAR/Assistance, sport or any other kind of home, if they don't work out, they get returned to the breeder right??
I will not get into a fight on the board over Police Dogs and their handlers, we just did that last month. I just think it is funny how Schutzhund people always think they are better than other handlers who compete in other sports and especially being better than handlers of dogs who are TRUE working dogs. A dumb a** is a dumb a**, doesn't matter if they handle a sport dog or police dog or pet dog. It still amazes me

Brittany,
I think you misunderstood me on GSD donations, I think it is a wonderful, charitable thing to do, and wonder if it could be a tax deductible donation as well.
What I think is preposterous is your statement that providing a pet for a wealthy family is just about the bottom of the barrel for a GSD.
But that's JMHO.
