Size of vulva during heat - Page 1

From my knowledge when a female comes in season her vulva swells up pretty large. Its usually large enough to see with having to turn the female on her back to see it. My female is on her third heat and neither this time or heats prior has her vulva does become enlarged but not as large as I would expect. I would post a picture but it might be a little disgusting. Is this a problem or is that some females just don't get as large as others?

I would say that depends on the individual female. With most of mine I can easily see this condition from a close view, I do have one (1) bitch who becomes so swollen that I swear people in the next county can tell she's in heat.

My experience is the same, it seems to run the gauntlet.  I have one that swells so much it's almost unseemly.  I call it the pulsating petunia........

Sorry, hit something too quick.  I have another that someone who did not know her well would probably not even notice the swelling.

Is this the same bitch running with your other male?

She is no longer with my male or in the same state as them I was just curious. Thanks everyone for your imput.

while reading this thread, it made me to think about my one female about 13 years back.  what a beautiful gsd that was.  very much regular in her cycles almost every 5 1/2 months she would come into season and as always, i would mate her with the best looking guy in my town or nearby.  but one thing amazed me and it still that she never had her vulva swollen.  never ever.  and that was perhaps the reason that out of around 10 matings, she never conceived.  the vulva would shrink from the normal size and instead of getting bigger, it actually became smaller.  so much despirate i was to know this reason, but no vet was of any help.  so keep ur fingers crossed and pray that she conceives notwithstanding the fact that her vulva is not swelling.

LOL Bob O.  My girl is like that too.  She's even a little on the "large" side normally.

Kali's backside looks like a bullseye when she's in heat. Nevertheless, she won't let any dog near her, at any stage of her heat. When you scratch her rump, she'll flag, but if a male even comes near her...lookout! "Leave me alone, I'm on my period!" Still, we don't take chances, but, now I know where the slang use of the term 'bitch' came from! jh
