if a female doesn't have a heat period before she is 11 months old, is something wrong with her?
by eichenluft on 02 January 2008 - 06:01
normally first heats come between 6-12 months, usually around 8-9 months is the norm. 12 months isn't unusual - more likely she had her first heat and it was very mild (very little blood which she may have kept clean, very little swelling if at all) - and you may have missed it. That is normal too :)

my female got her first heat at 9 months. but it lasted about 21 days. i think 11 months is still normal. some even come much later.

I had one that didn't come into heat until she was just about 13 months. After that she was every six months as regularly as you please. Never a health issue about her.

if a bitch is 14 months old and hasn't had one, is it time to go to the vet? or still wait and see?
by eichenluft on 05 January 2008 - 13:01
If the female is 14 months chances are you missed her first heat - they are easy to miss sometimes very subtle, with very little bleeding that the dog can keep clean, and very little swelling. I know I've missed some of my dogs' first heats - not unusual.

My bitch had her season and 81/2 months and we thought she had finished but she started dripping again 2 days later so her season lasted just under a month its usually 3 weeks.
