I have an older female (pet) that has HD. Lately she's gotten worse and is starting to show her discomfort by growling and warning the other dogs off. She's always been top dog (after me) in the house.
Xandor, my stud, is suddenly starting to push her around and has been attempting to mount her. He'll stand over her when she's laying down and just stare and wag his tail. Not wagging it playful, more like a threat almost.
She's been spayed since she was 6 months so I'm assuming this is a domination attempt. Of course she turns on him because she uncomfortable and she's always the one that did the mounting around here.
So is this an attempt to take over on Xandor's part? Does he sense that she is weaker? Or does he just have too much testosterone going on? He's almost 10 himself.

I might check to see if she has a urinary tract infection. Sometimes that can cause males to be attracted to a bitch as if she is in heat.

I hadn't thought of that and she has had them before. Thanks!

TRY TO KEEP THEM AWAY FROM HER NOW...SHE SHOULD ONLY BE LET OUT WHEN ITS JUST YOU AND HER...HER DAYS OF MIXING ARE OVER..LET HER HAVE PEACE NOW.....SHE IS NO MORE A COMMUNITY DOG NOW....SORRY SHE IS PROBABLY HURTING AND DOESNT NEED THE OTHER DOGS BOTHERING HER...DONT LET HER GET THAT GROWLING STARTED SHE DOESNT NEED TO BE SUBJECTED TO IT NOW...KEEP HER WITH YOU IN YOUR BEDOROOM OR WHERE EVER YOU NEED TO FIX HER A SPECIAL ROOM EVEN....

She's pretty good about putting herself out of harm's way and will usually curl up on a quiet couch or put herself in a crate. I know I need to make a decision about her soon but it's tough because I had euthanize my old boy not that long ago.

Your stud does sense her illness, and yes he will take the dominate role.
I agree she doesnt need the stress of trying to maintain her standing as alpha dog.
I would give her as much peace as your situation will allow.
I know as well as anyone how hard it is to decide the when.
Best wishes
