Glad it wasn't just me. I was beginning to think the New Year's celebratory champagne had a bit more kick than usual - as in from the fumes as of yet.

That would be the effect of "consumption". As in, consumption of the aforementioned champagne and not the antiquated "ailment" of "consumption".
Now, the fact that you are "tripping" over them would lead one to believe that you are definitely in possession of your faculties and are not, in fact, tripping over things that aren't there, i.e. "invisible".
