Can someone help in guiding how much treadmill is good for 8 months workingline male pup?
How to build stamina? Should I tie the dog or should I hold the leash while on treadmill?
How much is maximum time on treadmill he should do?
cheers

I know there are some who will disagree, but in my opinion he is too young for this type of exercise. His bones will not be ossified until at least one (1) year of age.
The inability of immature joints to deal with training stress is one of the reasons the S.V. raised its minimum age for obtaining the first title from twelve (12) to sixteen (16) months.
Others can offer advice, and I am just expressing my opinion here. I know all dogs approach maturity a bit differently. Me? I would not do it at this point in his life.

Bob-O

I agree completely with Bob-O. Young dog show classes are usually not sent too far in the gaiting for the reasons stated above. No reason to put unnecessary stress on forming joints. In fact, my own sales contract specifically VOIDS structural guarantees if the dog has received excessive exercise prior to 16 mos. of age or has been fed more than 26% protein or low-quality foods during the time its joints are forming.

I agree this age is too young. I personally do not care for treadmills but if you do use them never leave the dog unattended. I would personally rather see the dog out running the country side. A natural terrain offers a much more diverse work out than any treadmill could offer. If your up to it ..lol

As a rule there should be no major jumping or strenuous exercise done until after 1 year. And a vet should tell you when to start that kind of work/training. Some GSDs mature later. My girl wasn't ready for that kind of work until she was 18 months old. That's why the OFA foundation doens't do their certifications until after two years old. A little patience in the early years will pay off in the long run. Good luck to you and your dog.

I just got my teardmill up and running again to keep most of all my competition dog in shape . New England can be harsh in the winter and dogs tend to not get the excerise they need. I did let my 9 month old female have a feel for it. A very short introduction only to get her used to it . I don't like to physical stress or make young growing dogs do more then they natrualy want to do. such as running jumping etc I leave it until they over 1 year old !

a tredmill can be great for those times that you can't get out and walk the dog, due to weather... your 8 month old will be fine if you use it poperly for his age. using it to build his stamina at his age is definately a DON'T DO. if you use it the same as you would a normal walk you will be fine. it won't put any extra stress on the joints than a walk around the country side would. and if you get a minth of heavy snow your dog will be able to work off a little excess energy.

What "brand" or type of treadmill would you guys suggest?
I personally love the "jog-a-dogs"....but $2000 is a little steep for my budget at this moment.
Keep in mind that the "length" of the "walking/running" pad should be at least 5ft long.

You start the pup slow just like you build your endurance on one...slow with a pup...Myah has been on one since she was 13 months old...but she is a high endurance girl been doing swimming, tracking and lots of outdoor activity...the treadmill was started to build and get rid of her energy also..she is an Iska daughter and one of those that has to use up the excess...she has to be doing..and she loves it..Jeri stands right beside her...no leash no nothing , you just start them with a command just like stacking one....use whatever method you like...command her or him and slowly start it....she or he will catch on in one quick day.or two...
