May seem like a stupid question but I researched it on line and but cannot find an informative link to answer this question which is being discussed by some friends of mine. Does anyone have the right to post a dog's pedigree or does the pedigree become private information belonging only to the dog's owner? Thanks for your thoughts in advance. Cat

Cat, I can only speak for Germany and the SV system. That information is public, because you can purchase the breed book with all recorded litters or the Genetics CD with even more information like offspring (their hip and elbow ratings, titles etc.)from the SV. With the SV, everything is published: show ratings, stud information, hip scores etc. So, definitely public information. Chris

I think what Cat is truly asking is if only I have the right to register my personal dog, post his pedigree and the photos of his immediate ancestors (if not already registered). I sure as hell don't think that an outsider should be able come along and change the photos of my dogs (who are of no great historical significance in the greater scheme of things) on the PDB.

If you look under the Site info area on the left side of this website, under FAQ "I want my dog's pedigree removed" "Sorry, I will not do that. Normally a pedigree is an internal chain linking other pedigrees and it is very hard to remove pedigree information without disrupting a lot of other pedigrees. Pedigree information is public information dealt out by the Kennel Clubs (AKC, FCI, SV) and is not the breeders copyright. If there is an issue with comments, then rather send me an email asking for the removal of the comments. If there is an issue with a picture, then either ask me to remove it or better yet; update it. "

As far as this database is concerned people do change things in a pedigree. Its happened to me. If they are correcting mistakes or making some useful updates fine. but thats not always the case. And changing a detail has the ability of changing alot of other details thru the database system. No one has the right to cause harm, its alot of work sometimes to make it right.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Ferrum GSD's that is very helpful information. Would that the statement that a pedigree is not considered copyrighted material be for both breeders and owners? Also agree of course, no one should have the right to cause harm. Cat Hi KN, I have been reading and learning on this list for many years.

OK--I have an AKC dog born in 12/67 who has recently been registered here and whose pedigree (fortunately, incomplete) has suddenly appeared--thanks heavens with no photo. I have purposedly not registered any of my old AKC dogs with the PDB. IMO, although they were good dogs for their time, achieved various titles, and produced numerous champions, I would prefer to register them myself but only if I thought they were an integral part of the breed history.
