I have a litter of four. Three males, one female. The female has a much fuzzier coat than her male siblings. I have never seen a longcoat puppy, so am not sure if she is one. The sire is nine years old and has never produced a longcoat. The dam is six years old and has never produced a longcoat. Could it be possible for these two to produce a longcoat? Or is it more likely that this girl just has a really fuzzy puppy coat? (Please let that be the case!)

Dude, If you are breeding, don't you think you should have this knowledge?

How old are the pups ? Do you have a close up picture to show us ? You can usually tell as soon as they are born if they are gonna be a coat.

DeKal, Are you nuts (just kidding)? There is no knowledge required to breed these animals. Hell, just let them get together and produce. Then sell them to the first people with money, despite what kind of home, socialization and training the dog will get, and then, when the owner grows tired of the dog, refuse to take it back, and then breed more litters because you are a good steward of the breed (or was that the money it brings?). Who cares if you breed dogs with weak ears, long coats, other health problems, bad hips and elbows, allergies, eye problems and on and on and on......there is always some unsuspecting sucker down the road who will pay the money for a dog you bred. And you can SAY you will take the dog back *(even if you won't because you already have too many dogs at home to do that at the time of request =snicker, snicker)...... If the original poster wants to know whether the pup is long coated or not, we have to see a photo. Depending on age of the pup, it could be very, very difficult to tell. Many GSD pups are fuzzy early on and turn out to have perfectly normal coats. And if the pup is a LC, place it in a good pet home, spayed and don't get crazy over it.

I am asking for knowledge. How would I know if it's a longcoat if I've never seen one? I come to this site requesting the advice and input of others, but always have to worry about the snide comments that will be made. I don't produce longcoats and do not ever want to...this is the reason I am concerned. If I were just "out to make money", wouldn't you think I'd be excited about this, as many who "breed rare longcoats" would be? She is only six weeks old. I will take a picture of her tonight, if there is anyone out there kind enough to take a look at it and offer their advice. I really like this little girl and want to keep her and hopefully title her.

Also, how do I post a picture of her? She looked just as smooth as the other when she was born, up until a week or two ago, when she started getting fuzzier. Her sire is www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/110958.html and her dam is www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/487340.html.

rockinrkranch, you'll have to forgive hodie. She works in GSD rescue, and has seen it all. :-(( There are a lot of irresponsible breeders out there, as well as owners who shouldn't ever be allowed to have dogs, let alone kids. Please post a picture. There are lots of people here who have bred litters and will be glad to help you. One thing I know is it's very hard to identify a longcoat at birth.

if the sire and dam both carry longcoat recessive, they can produce a longcoat - one of the parents could carry the recessive and never produce a longcoat because the other parent doesnt' carry it. Impossible to tell you if the pup is longcoat without a good picture showing her body and head, even then sometimes it's obvious and sometimes it's still a guess. molly

I take it your local breed warden hasn't been around to inspect the litter and help you determine the coat?

rockinrkranch If you need some help posting the picture email it to me and I'll put up on the topic here. Sorry you are getting a lashing for a simple question. Not fair to you. This site is really going down hill and not as helpful seems a lot of people just want to bitch instead of help lately. Birdy...
