I don't think it is too late. Does he have alot of ear leather? Increase the amount of calcium in his diet and find someone to help you properly tape the ear. Where are you located? Socialization outings are also important. Have you talked to his breeder?

Hello. At 9 month old your dogs ears should be up. If they are floppy you may have a problem If the tips are flopping ovr you may be ok. I have seen dogs from great va line throw a pup with bad ears. Call the breeder and send him a pic. He may have guarantee for ears. Remember its a crapshoot what you get when you get a pup. Also who want a nice looking shep with floppy ears? every pup I have had ears up by 4-5 months at the latest. Best Regards. Edgar

My pup's left ear didn't fully stand until she was 10 mos old. When she was much younger, it did stand occasionally...but most of the time it was down (not even halfway up).

Isaac - by 12 weeks or there-abouts I am expecting any of my pups ears to be up, although I realise it can take longer in differing blood-lines. Large Leathery ears, and breed-lines are always looked at as possible problems in the ears staying erect, but have a check at the health of the ear cavity. Get the vet to have a good look, and see there is no ear infection deep-seated to stop them working... also, is he bringing in large back teeth? Socialise, and give lots of different stimulation and places for him to get alert about, give lots of bones to chew to strengthen the muscle, and after that keep hoping, but one thing dont do if you want to breed from him. .... please dont pin up the ears with packing, because if you do, its like cheating on a diet, it may work, til you get a load of soft eared puppies to sell.
I am of the opinion that this is why we are seeing GSD`s with soft ears, we are using dogs that have had their ears taped successfully, and are using lines that we think are sound when in fact they are not ! Then we get puppies with ears that dont work, and if we also tape ears - the whole circle starts again. If on the other hand, he is a beloved companion, never to be bred from, I would tape them to get the whole beautiful picture of your dog as an adult. Give him a couple of months of the advice given on these postings, and then tape if not working. Hope they come up on their own. Regards Mo - Mascani

We taped our 10 month old puppy's ear with cardboard, and two weeks later it stood straight up and never went down again. If you're going to do something, it should be done quickly. Your breeder can help you with this if you are not sure you can do it yourself.
Good luck.

When I got my first Shepherd a friend told me to make sure to massage his ears in an upward fashion, like standing them up..You know what I mean? Love to look at the puppy pics of all mine. One time the ears would be signling a left turn then the next a right but eventually stood up at 6 months or so...Good luck
