My dog who is a son of this dog has EPI which stands for Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency. This is a condition whereby the dog cannot digest and metbolize its food without enzymes being added to it. The dog does not produce enough enzymes. Research has proven that both the sire and dam must pass the gene to the offspring. Know this before buying a puppy out of Andrjuscha. He is a beautiful dog but does pass on the EPI gene.
Ges,
Can you please tell us who's the mother of your dog? If "both" parents carry the gene, then we need to know the mothers name :)
Can you also send us the research article about EPI? I would like to read more into this condition :)
Half the show dogs in this world these days carry that gene.
Its a crap-shoot.
SS
Shelly,
Can you give out a list of the half that does carry and the other half that doesn't carry?
No. I know of a few, but I don't want to get shot at dawn.
SS
If but one (1) parent carries the gene, then a portion (about 25%) of the progeny will be carriers only as well but none should develop EPI at least as a result of genetics.
However, if both parents carry the gene, then with the progeny you can have carriers only(about 25%-50%) as well as EPI-affeced progeny (about 25%-50%) that is a result of genetics. There are perfect theoretical genetic models for predicting the inheritance and affect of the gene, but the final outcome depends on nature.
So, as Shelley says the stud male is at best no more than one-half (1/2) of the problem. And, one should note that not all EPI is genetic in orgin.
Regards,
Bob-O
I also have an Andrjuscha male dog, who has loose stools. Of course the breeder denies that he has EPI. This is not the first time that I have heard of Andrjuscha having this issue. I also have a 9 month old dog our of Orbit Vom Hunhengrab that has gentically deformed kidneys. His life is limited according to the specialists. Hopefully, the Andrjuscha pup will live longer. I haven't researched this disease as of yet. Of course, it does take two, which means that no one is doing their homework to make sure that the female does not carry the same gene.
I have owned German Shepherds for over 20 years and left the American lines because of their issues. However, as bad as their issues were, I never lost a dog due to this garbage stated above, nor paid as much for a dog.
Therefore, going to the "German lines" has not been favorable for me. Between these two pups I have over $10,000 spent on them. Not to mention Vet bills. Shame on the "intelligent breeders" who are really not concerned about this breed, only the almight dollar!!!!
GES, please feel free to e-mail me to discuss this further. Below is my e-mail address.
No sugar coating this one guys, enough is enough

Is there a way to find out the results of EPI tests in SV registered dogs in Germany? What is EPI called in Germany?
Thanks

1) This online group's mailing list provides lots of info on EPI. To subscribe send an email to:

2) As well, Margaret Bradley is attempting to develop a database...

She did post here back in 2006:

3)The GSDhelpline has some introductory info on EPI and digestive problems in the GSD:

To subscribe to k9-EPIGLOBAL, your dog's EPI must be verified with TLI testing results. One must also complete and extensive questionnaire. I've inquired--I don't meet their qualifications--thank heavens!
