Shepherd Woman

Ok, never having a male dog before, I have been wondering WHEN Chaos was going to start lifting his leg to do his duty. He's almost 20 months. As I was standing at the kitchen sink, just a few minutes ago, I looked out and there he was standing there with one leg in the air! My boy is finally a man, lol. When did yours start lifting their leg?

Guess he's just a late bloomer then, LOL. Usually he just stands there and pees! In the past I have asked friends who have male dogs when theirs did and some said that their dogs still don't lift their legs and never have. Thought Chaos would be one of those!

I have definatly noticed if you do not have other male dogs or if your dog never sees other male dogs it takes them much longer, I believe a lot if it is a learned behavior, especially if a dog is neutered at a young age.

Birdy

Shepherd Woman, I had a male that didn't hike his leg until he was 23 months old. Until then he peed like a male horse and stretched his front and back legs out. Then one day when a friend of mine brought her male over for a visit must have kicked something in for my boy. After that dog left, mine went around and marked everywhere that other male had marked. It was a silly sight to watch. Birdy...

Male dogs raised around other males tend to do territorial making as sort of a vertical "pissing match". When raised with females, there is no competition or need to piss higher than the girls.

Thanks guys, I had heard that also that if they have never seen it done, then it does take longer to get it! It was quite funny though. He usually does what Birdy's dog did. Stretch out like a horse does. I ran in and told hubby our boy is finally a man, lol and he laughed too! Thanks for your experiences also.

We have noticed that a bitch in season can start a male to cock his leg for the first time as well....
