I know this is a completely individual choice for everyone. Some people may have owned both, and have no preference whatsoever. But could I ask if you do prefer the male or female GSD and why? Thank you, Vixen

Okay- I was going to mention something about this in my prior responce, so, my two are male & female. My girl is passive with us, and is very protective, even a little sharp, very suspicious of strangers, and tries to be dominant other dogs; my male even tries to dominate us; but he is much more social, friendly with people we meet on our walks, unless he picks up on any tension from me, then he stays aloof, and will be protective if he feels there's a threat. My girl is very affectionate with family, but she is always in some form of defense mode, with me & my husband, she will remain aloof with strangers, with my grandkids, she is exremely defensive, won't let anyone non-family approach them...however she doesn't seem to mind other kids playing with them, but even as a pup, she would position herself between my grandkids & any strangers, she also 'herds' them around the house, which is pretty funny, she always wants them together in the same room, where she can keep an eye on them. My granddaughter thinks she's an overgrown stuffed animal, but God help anyone that would try to hurt her when Kalie's around! I don't know if this helps, but those are my observations. jackie harris BTW-female is showlines: male is workinglines

I have always preferred males and still do....... I have worked females that I got along with, but if given the choice, will always take a male. I always feel they have more "heart" and loyalty to his handler. BUT, again, as you know it is simply personal preference.

I think guys will choose female dogs and women males. I think I like would like a confident stable female, but heat cycles get annoying if you want to breed. ( confident and stable is because they can get defensive, and I do not want her defending against something that is not a threat because she has weak nerves)

Overall I prefer females. Family and personal protection, I think females are best. I also prefer females for the sport work. I like not having to fight with a competition dog, and control is usually better. In my past experience with my competion female, I would always lose a little in the protection so my OB had to be really strong. I enjoy OB and take pride in it cuz to me that is the true measure of a dog/handler team. All top competition dogs will bite. I usually ended up taking 2nd or 3rd to a male dog though. For police work it depends on the mission. If I am going to doing detection, I would still take a female. Patrol work--That's for the boys. Only speaking of the dogs of course :)

i've had two gsds; one female and my current male. our female we have now is probably a mali/gsd mix. she looks and acts more like malis. my male is the one who will go to search out the "missing" child in a family get-together or stick with the youngest, always trying to "herd" him or her away from what he perceives as "trouble". he is usually (now) the first to bark at strangers at the door, but doesn't bark at people on the street, just watches them. if he knows them, he wants to go see them. i've had a female mutt (chow/husky) who was very much the same; very protective of kids, friendly to most people. since i only had my female gsd for a short time, her personality was still forming, but she tended to be more of a one person dog (me) and very watchful over the house and yard. our mali mix is very protective of our son (she's his). someday in the future, i will have 2 gsds, one female and one male, but i think, so far, that i prefer males, except for the girl i had to give up. i'll miss her forever.

I did not really appreciate females until these 2 girls I have now. In my personal experience, the females are a bit more biddable and less inclined to challenge. That's why I typically recommend a female for families with small children. Of course there are exceptions, but I find this to be true about 2/3 of the time. Now I personally really miss having a male, I like their macho attitude. I look forward to keeping a male from one of my breedings soon.

Prefer Males, even though my "dog of a lifetime" was a female. But then she was a very masculine female and had she been a person, would have probably been transgender. :)

LOL I have one of those females now Trafalgar. My husband always says she's got the biggest set in the house. I prefer the knucklehead males for some reason. Females are tough to live with if you have more than one dominant bitch around. Things also seem to bounce off my male better. Probably because he really doesn't give a shit what he's done wrong or what you think of him.
