Here is a website you won't want pass up if you have any questions about your GSD. Not sure what it takes to qualify as an expert, but here's a question from a GSD owner and the response from their GSD "expert".
Question posted 6 /21/2007
"I imported a female GSD from Germany that is out of a VA1 World Sieger. I bred her in 2005 and after that she started developing allergy symptoms. The vet ran tests and she does have allergies. They are wanting to treat her with steroids, etc but she cannot be treated while pg and nursing. Does her allergies make her an unacceptable dog for breeding and should she be spayed?
Answer
Dogs are very prone to getting or having allergies, however if she is of good champion stock I think she can still be bred........personally 2 of my dogs have allergies.......If you however think she will be miserable pregnant and nursing with not being able to get the steroids with rashes/pimples/vomiting/hot spots then spay her if her allergies are very bad she will be in very bad humor all of her pregnancy and nursing time since she doesn't have the steroids.
All you ever wanted to know and then some...........

Wow. [snicker!]
I have an e-friend who owns a beagle with very severe allergies. Turns out his sire has a history of producing allergic pups.
I would not wish what she's been through with that dog on my worst enemy. She has nearly lost him a couple of times due to allergic reactions. He gets a weekly bath, even in the winter. He gets a weekly desensitization injection. He has to be on anti-inflammatory meds all the time, which leave him vulnerable to infections, and might possibly shorten his lifespan. Just two weeks ago, the combination of prednisone and a severe stress threw him into a possibly life-threatening crisis. Luckily, the owner was alert enough to get him to the vet, who said she caught it just in time, and he hadn't suffered any organ damage. But now he has some sort of weird eye/face infection. It's just one darn thing after another!
Needless to say, as soon as he'd completed his conformation championship, the owner had him neutered. The breeder no longer uses that stud, and apologizes to my freind every time she sees her.

Experts?
So much wisdom huh.
Dogs are not supposed to be alergic yet I know many are.
Hey! Merry Christmas.

People just don't realize that an allergy is very serious in a dog. It's not juat "an itchy dog". I wonder if there any others with allergies out of that "World Sieger".
