I saw the excellent thread running now, about remembering our service men and women, and an incident near my home today, brings me do this thread. No postings are really necessary (although I am sure the usual suspects will show up and claim I ran over one of my own dogs, but oh well).
When I got home from work earlier today, my wife told me that she saw a Beagle on the road in front of the house next door, and that it had been hit by a car. She went out to it and found that it was bleeding heavily and was really messed up. Just then, the neighbor from the house the dog was in front of, came out to also assist. She is a new neighbor and we had only had a few cursory hello's with them in the past. Anyway, my wife carried the dog to the side of the road and her and our neighbor just tried to comfort it as it died. She said that it only lived less than two minutes and was beyond saving in her opinion. She said it was in shock and did not seem to be suffering a lot. I have mentioned before that she is a nurse in a OBGYN clinic. I have never seen this particular dog before but my wife said she believe she has seen it on the side of the road in the past. Many people around here have dogs that just run around. Most are Beagles or small mutts.
Anyway, my wife and I every year, do something special for the dogs in the local shelter here at this time of the year. This year we have purchased Beef Knuckle Bones from our local Wal-Mart, and have 17 so far. That is all they had. We need at least 28 for all of the dogs currently at the shelter. So, we are looking for a few more, then we will be taking them to the shelter just before Christmas. They cost $3.98 each if your interested in doing them for your local shelter dogs.
Yes, I know that animals do not know or care anything about Christmas and that this type of gesture is really about making ourselves feel good, however, we still do it.
So, I ask that if you have a little extra money and time, please pick up some dog treats or such, and donate them to the dogs in the shelters. Ask for permission to hand one to each and every dog from your own hands, so that "you know" they got them. Some shelters might not want their dogs to have anything other than what they give them, so ask first. My shelter has no problem with it, but that might be because of our past relationship with them. So ask first. Try and grace them with a little something. You will feel good and the dogs will have a nice minute or few minutes. I am doing the knuckle Bones this year because we have some extra money and I figure it will give them something to do for quite awhile in those cages. Besides barking. Last year we just did Milk Bone dog biscuits and the year before we did pigs ears pieces. Lately, I have read some not so nice things about pigs ears though. Through out the year we give blankets and bleach.
No, not blowing my own horn this time. Just giving some ideas to others. It's my good deed for the day on this site. I have trashed enough, so I am making up for it a little. Merry Christmas.

You and your wife have big hearts and kind souls. I think I will do something for the local GSD rescue tonight instead of waiting til the first of the year. There's another small rescue just up the road where I board Blitz. I think those dogs might like some of the treats Blitz doesn't. You have motivated me, thanks and Merry Christmas to both of you.
