I found this ad. in a local classified section.... I found it oddly refreshing in a painful sort of way. Honest and ignorance blended together for the common man.
2 pups left, purebred labradoodle, one male, cute, one female, kinda ugly. 574-xxx-xxxx
Now... I am NOT in the market for a dog of any kind, but I was so very intrigued by this ad that I actually called. I was under the impression that labradoodle was a MIX of labrador and poodle, so the statement "purebred" befuddled me. When I spoke to the man on the phone it was apparent that the word "labradoodle" containing 4 consonants was a real stretch for him. When I asked him what purebred meant, he told me, in a tone that clearly showed how foolish I must be for asking such a question, that purebred of course meant that the father was purebred lab and the mother was purebred poodle. I felt foolish. I asked him about the 2 remaining puppies and the cost. His response was.... and I am quoting to the best of my recollection through tears of laughter and trying to NOT sound like I was snickering..... "Well now, the boy he kinda cute in a squatty sorta way, he 200 and now that little girl pup, she be kinda not so on the cute side, she gotta kinda smushed in type lookin face, she 300"
I was in need of depends undergarments by this time and I needed to wrap up the conversation, but I just HAD to ask one more question... "Why is the ugly dog more expensive?"
answer. "well she can have pups ya'll can sell and make money on ya know."
I had absolutely NO response to that marvelous logic... I thanked him and hung up.

And it's all too typical in todays society. The other day as I bought dog food, the girl behind the counter asked me what kind of dogs I had and she said "Oh I have a German Shepherd too, she's black and white." I mumbled, "cool." Hoped like hell she meant silver or cream even though those are not the greatest colors to shoot for, some people like em. I didn't have the nerve to ask if the dog was a solid black with a white chest or something like that either. I was affraid to find out it was a panda or some other gross breeding done on purpose. I just recently had to dodge some teenagers peddling a shopping cart full of Xmas puppies at Walmart so I wasn't in the mood.
Everyone and I mean everyone, thinks they have what it takes to be a damn dog breeder!

ITA, 4pack.
As proof, here are some 'gems' from Yahoo Answers Pet Forum, which will give you an idea of how totally ignorant your average pet owner is:
"I didn't have the heart to spade my dog. I don't think I should put her under to fix somethings thats not broke."
"Does anyone know somebody giving away puppies in Indiana or Chicago?"
"Are there any organizations that will help pay for my puppy's surgery?" (Oh, yes, of course, for that FREE puppy...)
"My mom wants my dog in the basement. Its not finished but it has windows and we were thinking of getting another dog so she can have a playmate I want to bring her up in the house but my dad says no what should I do I think having her down there is wrong." (Getting ANOTHER dog?? Kiddo, you shouldn't even be keeping the one you HAVE!)
"Is it ok to use sevindust on my dog for fleas?" (Oh, yes, of course, if you want to poison the dog as well as the fleas...)
"My dog is having a sesiur. My dog is a yorkie and last night she just spin around like she has a stiff neck we went to the animal clinic and the doctor said shes having a sesiur but its too expensive if were gonna leave her there is $400 for a night.and she needs an operation...." (Needless to say, this dog was a puppy mill dog, purchased at a pet store!)
"Do you think that all dogs should be free?" (re. a Staffordshire terrier being walked with a muzzle. When she tried to get near the dog with her dog, despite the owners warning, it went nuts...The next time she saw the dog, it was being walked WITHOUT a muzzle, by a different person, who said dogs should be free.)
"How long does a dog usually stay pregnant?"( Four people answered 'three months'!)
Oh, and this gem, which is all too typical of the many many people who either can't afford to take their dog to the vet, or are TOO IGNORANT to know the dog has a very serious, life-threatening problem!
"My dog cant walk and her back boobs are sore... what can i do??? She has just had pups, and she is thirsty and shivering, even when the house is warm. she cannot move and is yelping when we touch her back boobs or leg. What is this, and how can i help her????"
What's my point? I just wanted to make it clear that your average (pet) dog owner hasn't a clue what they are doing.
As has been often said, "you can't cure stupid"

Maybe these AR zealots should work on passing a law that requires a dog buyer must an IQ above that of a mushroom. That alone would but back on the number of dogs sitting in rescue.

Meant "cut back", not but back. I guess my IQ isn't so great either.

Blitzen : You're funny.....people dont need IQ they just need a little common sense.....

by 4pack on 20 December 2007 - 20:12
Yellow common sense requires an IQ above 2. People shouln't be able to breeed themselves if they are that stupid.

you know it absolutely fascinates me when you talk to women who are having trouble with infertility and they are taking temperatures and doing urine ovulations tests and keeping in almost constant touch with their fertility doc and then some 16 year old girl giggles and coo's to her boyfriend and BAM next month she's pregnant.
as to the comment regarding people who had responded to a dog's gestation as 3 months.... we have had More than one person in our clinic who assumed that their dog would be pregnant 9 months.... just like humans.

Sunsilver you need to stay away from the Yahoo pet forum. It'll make you postal. I visited once....just once. I was in bed for days with a migraine.

Well, I was trying to inject a little sanity...:rolls eyes: Yeah, I know, hopeless cause, but I DID get credit for a few 'Best Answers'!
Beside, I think it was Tig who said that spay/neuter campaigns have failed to reduce the pet overpopulation problem, while education of the Great Unwashed has been quite successful.
Guess I'm still a teacher at heart...
When I was doing my teaching degree, I had to do a class survey as one of my projects. I think I chose Grade 10's as my target class. The survey had to do with their knowledge re. responsible pet ownership. Of course, after it was done, I went over it with them, and explained which answers were the 'most correct'! I think I opened a few eyes that day...I hope so, anyway!
