Just curious how many of you are involved and wonder what the actual difference is? Are the drives of these dogs about the same? I have trained many PPD, and Police dogs, but never dabbled in anything like this.

They are worlds apart. To try to explain them on a database like this would be difficult. In short, I have done French Ring Sport. Great sport involves alot of technique, esp in the bitework. Good test of a dog in levels 2-3. Very tough jumps. Hurdle, long jump, and palasaid wall. In bitework the decoy is given alot of free reign to do whatever they can to make the dog lose points. There are set excercises but the decoy does not have to work each dog in the same manner. In addition the outs must be lightning fast. KNPV is not done in the US or any other country I have heard of. (Could be wrong but never heard of it) It is basically a police dog certification and most of the dogs get titled and sold as police or military dogs. There are trials and a national championship so it is a sport as well. They have scenarios such as a search in the woods and an article search for a fired shell caseing. Just overall more geared fo police work. As far as the differences in dogs, French Ring you will find very fast, agile, high prey dogs. There needs to be a degree of hardness for a dog to reach ring three. (esp. in France) Intense stick work and a 45 minute routine, no break. You generally will not see as much active aggression as this goes against the need for the super fast outs. KNPV dogs are usually hard as nails, high fight, and active aggression. They can be very sharp and you do see handler aggression. They are often cross-bred with different breeds but come back to the Mal.

We were recently looking at KNPV - why? Because there was a chance we'd be moving to the Netherlands. The KNPV sport is not done outside of their country since they don't certify judges to perform outside of Holland, is my understanding. The Dutch are...uniquely introverted, in my opinion :) Here's an interesting video of the 2007 highlights. Right after a bicycle takedown, my favorite part of the video is at 2:08 ....check it out and tell me your thoughts.
