Can someone help me : I have a female that allways have small litters - 4,1,3 and two pups. She goes in heat at 4.5 months. I know that this is hereditary but is there something that can make her have larger litters, so I can breed her less frequently?

Hi Steve! I've found in the past if I let a bitch down from work a month before I believe she is due in season, I get bigger litters. If you work her, she is just like an athlete, too tight and too much muscle, let her down from work, confine her and her muscles will relax. If she's a fence runner, crate her most of the day. It's worked for my bitches, maybe it will work for your girl.
There are times when breeding your female back to back will do nothing but produce small litters, and if they even get pregnant. If you want a really good answer about this then why not visit Ed Frawley at his site and ask him this question.You can do so at

Two suggestions from my own experiences with small litters - it that the more dominant, "masculine", strong a female is, the less puppies she will have, if she even gets pregnant at all. My dominant "butch" female had her all-time largest litter at 5 puppies - other litters were 2 and 3 puppies routinely. There's really nothing you can do about this, in my experience. I do agree with the suggestion to "let her down", let her get "soft" and out of shape a bit (not fat though) before breeding her - look at Olympic athletes (women and maybe men too I don't know) I've heard they have fertility problems when they are in competition-shape.
Second suggestion comes from my reproduction vet - check her thyroid level. If she is hypo-thyroid, then of course you shouldn't breed her in the first place as this is a problem that can be passed on to her pups (hypothyroidism will cause abortion/absorption as well). But, according to my repro-vet: Even thyroid level that are low-normal or even in the mid-normal range, might not be sufficient to maintain the pregnancy. So, she might get pregnant with 8 puppies, but along the way (usually 3-5 weeks) some or all of those puppies may be aborted and absorbed - you would never know they were there in the first place. Repro-vet recommended putting all females on a low dose of thyroid meds before breeding, and keeping them on it throughout the pregnancy. They should not stay on it when they are not pregnant, unless they are hypo-thyroid. This will raise the level to high-normal or even above-normal, which may help support the full pregnancy. I give my pregnant girls 1/2 pill of .6 Soloxine from the time they come into heat until the day they whelp, on this suggestion. But, ask a repro specialist about this, and other suggestions - that is the best route to take.
Thank you guys, I will try to go by your advices! By the way, she is very healthy, very active, and I know she is off the bloodlines from her mother's side with very small liytters. I am wandering is there some "magic pill" simmilar to fertility treatment in humans?

I don't believe that product is being made by Solid Gold any longer and I tried the link mentioned above and when you click on the button to buy it it says it's unavailable. Also I found this article that was interesting.
