My two dogs are typical German Shepherds: vocal. One dog rarely barks, the other one barks at the drop of the hat, but they both whine...nonstop. Usually when we're getting ready to go for a walk, or when they're waiting for me to let them out of the car. Everything we've tried so far to stop them hasn't put a dent in the behavior. I tried waiting until they stop whining to do what they want (put on the leash or open the door)but it takes quite a while for them to stop and then they just start right back up again as soon as I make a move. I've also tried correcting them when they get particularly loud or annoying, but they usually just sit or lay down and continue to whine. Is there a way to stop this? They feed off each other and if one whines, the other one will start right up too. It would be nice to have quiet dogs waiting patiently for me to take them for walks.

I have found the the GSDs I have had over the years whine/talk and are very vocal. Especially working line GSDs. It anoys me, my wife sees it as a form of communication. I have found nothing to stop it other than getting on with whatever they are anticipating. Good luck!!!

My youngest whines probably 22 hours out of the day! Vet says she is fine.

I have 8 vocal, loud screaming, whining, working line kids and there is nothing you can do to stop them.....I called my neighbor who lives in the woods behind me probably two blocks away and told her , I wasn;t killing my dogs,,they just talk ,,and they talk loud....as soon as I walk into their site..or out of their site...its like an anxiety that Im not going to feed them, or get them out or pay just them attention...I have two females that are horrible....and have been since they were 10 months old...two males are very vocal also., and One is a constant barker ,unless he has his bowl in his mouth...after all are out and the day is done,,,they go to sleep , but if I make an appearance the loud screaming bark or vocals start...and they are very loud...I can yell, quiet,,,and only for maybe two minutes....will they maintain their composure....Now when I get them all out...one by one...they are quiet...except if the see me inside and the gate to the house is closed ,,they will whine...until I disappear...all of mine will tell me if they are inside and kenneled , that they need to go out...they bark a very loud different bark......

Sounds just like my two! Spunky whines constantly. Whines right after we come in if I leave the room, if I leave the house with out her, when she is happy to see someone, if she sees another dog or stranger person she growls and then whines, whines if we are walking and I stop to talk to someone. Nenz is usually pretty quiet but when it's time to go out he starts in to and even kind of yowls impatiently. Ignoring them until they sit still doesn't work either. It takes at least five minutes or more just to get leashes on to go out the door they spin around so much.....Spunky makes so much noise if I leave without her that the downstairs neighbors called the cops.

Our girls whine in the kennel and crates. If they will not be quiet we put training collars on them. Most of the time it only takes a tone to quiet them, other times it takes the lowest setting there is. When multiples are in the house whining you need an method to quiet them or you can't lesten to anything else!

Man, it's good to know my boy is not the only "whiner" around. It drives my husband crazy. I've tried everything mentioned so I've just learned to ignore it. He's gotten better over the last year, but whenever I grab the car keys, put on my "muck boots" or coat he makes it clear he's going with me! Once we're outside, he stops (couldn't be because he got his way, could it?)

They all do it. It's what makes the breed so lovable.

My 19 month old puppy cries constantly. I started a similar thread when he was a baby. It has been a real sore spot with me. He has actually made me cry during a stressful time and he would NOT shut up. He lays on the couch and cries, staring at me with big brown puppy eyes. When I check his feet, which he hates, he just lays there and whimpers while I go over every toe. Just crying like a baby until I stop. He hates having his toes checked - so I take my time. It's really funny. For a while, we couldn't even watch a movie because he would cry through the whole thing, I think it's just that he's bored and not getting any attention. So, of course, he would get up into our laps and lay across us, all 100 pounds of him. Now, we have to give him a bone or something to chew on just so we can enjoy watching tv. It's a good thing he's cute or I would have killed him by now for sure.

I must have the odd dogs. Never heard a whine out of either one of them. They'll bark at strangers or other dogs though.
