Can people share their experiences with doing AI Breedings with Frozen Semen? What's involved differently than an AI with fresh semen. Also, how many were successful and not?
Just Curious as I have heard people swear by it and others who have spend thousands and thousands of dollars with no puppies.

I have only done it once. The only thing I know that is different is they put the female under sedation and put the semen directly into the female's uterus. When I did this me girl had 7. Six healthy and one still born. So my success rate is 100%.

You may find these two sites give useful informaton. Some people actually use AI or frozen as a way of limiting the number of puppies they have since litters to tend to be a bit smaller. Don't understand that thinking myself but it takes all kinds to make the world.

The biggest problem I see is that often you are buying a pig in the poke because you have no way of knowing the viability of the sperm until it is thawed. There have been litters from 20 year sperm that's not necessarilty the problem, it's ussually the quality that went in. So you have to decide what to do if sperm is not good at all or weak at best. Best decide before hand. May want to negotiate something in the stud contract if you can.

I like to do the AI with just the normal sperm live not frozen...I want to know that day how the sperm count is and the two times I have done it were successfull...not frozen though...

Put me on the spent thousands of dollars and no puppies list.

Thank you to all who have replied. That's kinda what I have been told, some were fine, some spent a lot. Sounds like it may be too much of a crap shoot to me.

Amen to the crapshoot! Do natural cover and get multiple ties.

Here in Oz we have very good success with frozen semen we have had a litter of 13 from frozen semen. It is used all the time using semen from all over the world and of course different breeds. It is not a crap shoot it just needs careful planning. When the semen is collected it should be frozen then rethawed to see the mobility of the semen prior to shipping. Of course the timing for the AI is very important and the actual insemination is normally done straight into the uterus via a small incision. I believe one clinic in the US does the AI via the cervix with very good success. Unfortunately we don't have access to the dogs that breeders in USA and Europe take for granted so frozen semen is our only option.
