ok, now that I have everyones attention I will ask the question. I know humping is a dominannt gesture, not sexual, but my spayed female humps my young intact bitch prior to her coming into heat. (sorry for the run on sentence) I tell her stop and she does, because I am the alfa. My question, would you allow this to continue so the older bitch can show her position in the pack?

The older bitch will most definitely put her in her spot sooner than later!

yes, shepherd Woman but here is the question...would you tell the older bitch to stop the humping ? Also, when the younger bitch arrived she was 3 months old. For the longest time the older female treated her like she was her pup. She even ran interference when my intact male wanted to play with the younger dog.

I would immediately stop this demonstration of dominance by the older bitch. The younger bitch needs as much self-confidence as she can muster, and being subjected to this type of dominance can damage her spirit. This may also lead to a nasty fight when she is older and decides to try the older female. Puppies learn a lot from older dogs, so there can certainly be some socialization. I would allow them to socialize and play together, but it would always be supervised. Good Luck, Bob-O

I would tell her No and not allow it to continue.

this is exactly what i have done and it puts an end to it. the younger gal is 26 months old and never stops moving. the older female is 5 and works when it is necesary then turns the switch off. Glad I am doing the correct thing. thanks all

My older spayed bitch (11 years) humps my younger intact bitch as well. However it is during the heat cycle when the youngin is standing for her. :). Then the younger intact one likes to hump my 5 year old male. For her I definitely think that it's hormonal more than dominance.

Totally not an answer just a funny comment. I knew a lady whose GSD tried to hump the crate when her smaller breed was in it when in heat. She spayed the female. My 10 month old very leggy intact male tries desparately to hump my 10 pound Havanese who just walks away because there is about 6 inches between her back and his "doodle". Words can not describe how confused he looks when she just isn't there anymore. When he was younger he just did indescrement humpage of inanimate objects. Now he tries when she is in heat. She's getting fixed in the next few weeks anyway. In between cycles.
