If you found a stud dog that you wanted to use and it was 10 hours from your home would you do a progesterone test and make the drive and breed your bitch one time and hope she takes, or would you get a hotel and have her bred again the next day? I have never had to go this far but I found a dog I really like and I'm willing to make the drive. Just curious how you would handle this, and how many of you actually breed your dog more than just once when she is ready.

I would drive there and have her bred twice.Plus it gives you a chance to see the stud in person along with all of his attributes and faults..

Get a hotel. We're lucky we have our camper so when we did something similar took the camper instead of a hotel.

I bred my girl Bonnie for the first time, just once
and she had 13 pups, she herself was from a litter
of 13, I was surprised cause I didn't calculate her
heat as well as I should have, but I noticed her mom
having her way with her (Sorry, didn't mean to gross you out).....
So I knew it was time to breed her.
If you are paying attention, than the optiumum time to breed
is on the 13th day after you notice the first drop of blood.
I never progesterone test, your best test is to have
a neutered male you can borrow from someone & see if
she likes him and will flag for him, if she flags her
tail to the side, then she's ready, bred her one day,
them skip a day and breed her a second time.
It also works if you have other females around that your
plays with, they will jump on her to, and it's a sure way
to know when she's ready, sort of like a hump fest!!
Also, I would suggest a hotel or camper, take your pick!!!

If you have a male on hand to 'test' her with(any breed tall enough to be somewhat compairable), you can find out and see when she would be willing to accept a male without all the cost of progesterone testing. If she's early, she may be bitchy with a male. But if she's nearing readiness, she will get more playful(flirty) with a male and may actually try to mount him. If she's been bred before, she will be easier because she understands more of what is going on. Once it looks like she will allow a male to actually mount and try to penetrate her, get her to the stud dog within 24 hours. She should take from one breeding, but it definitely is additional insurance to get 2 ties if possible for a veteran female. You can also test for flagging by rubbing down her spine. If she arches her back and flips her tail to the side when you get toward her tail during petting, then she's flagging you for breeding. That might help.

Maybe I am nuts, but at the end, I just bred the dogs one time. It was much easier, and made no difference in the outcome.
