We have a male, he weighs 20lbs.  He seems to have a very low appetite.  He is only eating approx 1.5 cups of food per day.  He will usually wait a couple of hours in the morning before even showing any interest in his food.  My wife figured out that if you put a couple of pieces of food on the floor in front of his dish, he will eat those then usually go to his bowl and eat some food.  She doesn't do this regularily and I never have, but it does seem to get his appetite going. *shrug*

I have been giving him 1/2 cup at all 3 "feedings"  and he rarely finishes that in one sitting.  I take the food up between feedings, thinking that he will be extra hungry for the next feeding and so he doesn't get to piece between meals.

I tried offering him food 4x per day and that didn't help a bit.

For the most part he shows a near total indifference for his food.  I can't remember even one time that he just went over and started eating when we put his food in his bowl.  He just just walks over, sniffs it and walks away.

The breeder had him on pro-plan.  I (slowly) switched to Canidae all life stages which i felt was good quality especially for the price.  He showed the same indifference to that so i thought I would try something different.  I was thinking maybe he just didn't like the Canidae.  I switched (slowly again) to Innova Large breed puppy which is a little higher quality and a ton more expensive but it's not really about the money anyway.  Same results.

We are very careful about the quantity of treats given throughout the day.  Only during training, (sit, down, stay, shake) that kind of thing.  We wanted to make sure he isn't full enough so as not to have much of an appetite.

He looks, and acts very healthy.  He is very thin but not emaciated.  You can easily feel all of his ribs but not see them.

His stools seem OK, wet but not runny.  3x per day usually.

Part of me says he will self-regulate his intake but man, it just seems like he should eat more and more enthusiastically.  The other breeds we have had (rotties mainly) in the past couldn't wait for meal time, especially in the morning.

We have a vet visit in the next couple of days.  I'm taking a stool sample in then.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

How long have you had this puppy. He could be still feeling stress from leaving his littermates and breeder. My puppies probably eat about 3/4 to 1 cup of food 3 x's a day at that age. His weight sounds about right too, you should be able to easily feel his ribs, not see them. It is better to grow a puppy lean then grow one over weight. You might try skipping the middle meal and see if that helps. Also add warm water to it, that enhances the flavor. I would not make a big deal out of him not eating, if he is hungrey he will eat, as long as he is other wise healthy. I would give him 20 minutes to eat and then remove then food wether he has eaten or not, and do not offer him any more food until the next meal time.  Norma

I agree with Norma, put his food down for him to eat and if he shows no interest or walks away that is it until the next feeding.  I personally would not give him any treats until he was eating better on a schedule.  Any vomiting at all?  Still active and wanting to play?  Once he learns if he doesn't eat right away his food dissapears that should cure him

I have had him for 2 1/2 weeks.

No vomiting at all.

Very active and playful.

I'll try that and see how it goes.

Thanks for the suggestions!

One of my shepherd puppies was finicky too from time to time.  She was very active, no problems, but just wasn't that interested with food.  I came up with a few food combinations that have helped out as I too, would get quite frustrated and concerned.

#1: In a food processor, process about two cups of the puppy's dry food, a few pieces of cooked liver, and a cup or so of water.   I also add a slice of Natural Balance Dog Food Rolls (my dogs like beef). Mix that thoroughly, then put a few spoonfuls in their dry food and mix.  You can also give them just the mixture if you want as it already has their dry food in it.  One of my dogs didn’t really eat regularly the first two weeks we got her and this was the only thing that ended up activating her appetite and she ate regularly from that point on.  I was able to take away the “mash” finally, but it really was a convenient and simple way to get her to eat.  You’re basically making up your own canned food; only you get to control the ingredients.  Be sure to put leftovers in fridge.

#2: Take a small amount of liver sausage and mix it in with their regular dry food. You can also put a package in a food processor, put in some water, and mix til its semi-liquid. This makes it even easier to mix in the dog’s food so it gets fully incorporated.  All of my dogs love it and will clean their bowls very quickly.  Stores well in the fridge and takes only a second to add, along with other fresh foods they like and their supplements.

A small amount of yogurt is also good for their digestion.  Every puppy I've had absolutely loves yogurt and if you mix it in well, that can sometimes help if they're finicky.

Good Luck!

I haven¿t had a dog what not want to eat. But in this case I would try it with a special milk for puppies. I found a milk what the dogs love - more than their life. And no dog don¿t want it. Perhaps the puppy doesn¿t like this food. Perhaps you could use another dry food? Or test it ?

dont give 9 1/2 week old pups milk .... milk is not on the diet....and is not a good item ,,,its can cause diahrea and is not teaching a dog good habits... dry dog food with a little raw meat added once a day an feed yogurt or cottage cheese in a seperate dish after the dog food is eaten... This pup has not settle in yet....its still getting accustomed to a new life...sounds ok....check stool with vet and just stay on a not too high protein....Innova, in my books , is too high protein for a docile pup,,,,not in training....and might be way too rich.... dont baby this pup....just put a tiny bit of liver in the dry food ,,mix a tiny bit of hot water, stir and give....this is a good diet of food, and if he keeps up the same pace he on, he will get better with the eating....he will eat more as he grows and the more activity you give him to do, the more his appetite will increase....he wont starve...so dont worry....as long as he is worm free and has normal stools.... If you keep changing him , you are confusing the issue.....he will eat when he gets hungry.....

Have you tried putting some type of gravy on his food, or even add a little bit of canned food to his kibble? I found that helped tons when I first brought my pups home. Find something that he really likes and put it below the kibble so he has to really want to eat to get to it. Just a thought.
