shipping a dog to either Frankfurt or Vienna - Page 1

Has anyone sent a dog to either Frankfurt or Vienna lately and if so, what is the cheapest way to do it?  The airlines have super cheap fares but the taxes and fees are more than the fares.  I'm considering sending someone with the dog as excess baggage which seems to be cheaper than sending as cargo.  This would be in Jan or Feb.

Just checked with Lufthansa and the fare for a person is $906 plus $250 each way for the dog.  Sounds pretty steep to me.  Fare is about $500 and the taxes and fees are another $400. 

What are the requirements for shipping overseas?  I assume current vaccinations and a health certificate within 10 days of shipping..

Judy, you need permission from the respective Agricultural State Ministry ahead of shipping. For Frankfurt, that is the Veterinary Office of the State of Hessen.

P.S. Hmm, I see that the links to the different Veterinary Offices do not work. I will check this out tomorrow at work and give you the address of the one for the State of Hessen in Wiesbaden, Germany.

I love Vienna, went after my husband died and saw the Austria country sides and went on to Holland, Germany , Switzherland ,  Italy and France .....  Vienna and the sound of Music....and  livestock in the country side is beautiful....Makes a wonderful place for  a vacation....

I just got back last night from Frankfurt, flew in with a dog, my airfare was $600.00 on United direct from SFo, the dog was in a 500 crate and he was $254.00, they quoted me only $200.00 on the phone, but $250 is what we paid, still cheaper than shipping him cargo, last time my friend shipped cargo, they charged 100 Euros to get him out of customs over there.  I had no issues with the dog!

You may want to check this list and perhaps there will be someone else going to Frankfurt that is willing to take the dog for you, I offered to bring dogs home, and had numerous people email me, but everyone fell through.
